After eight unsuccessful pregnancies, Ms. H (born in 1978, from Ninh Binh province) underwent multiple artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, but without success. On her ninth embryo transfer in early 2023, she conceived, and the arduous journey of maintaining the pregnancy began.
Later, Ms. H developed gestational diabetes. She was examined by doctors at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, received endocrine treatment with insulin, and was advised on a proper diet. Carefully taking care of herself each day, the pregnant woman couldn't hide her happiness when she saw her baby healthy.
At 38 weeks and 3 days of pregnancy, the doctor determined it was the right time to deliver the baby. That day, a baby girl weighing 2.8 kg was born, bringing immense joy.
In Vietnam, most pregnancies in women over 50 are achieved through assisted reproductive technologies. In July, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital successfully delivered a baby for a woman over 50 from Son La province. Remarkably, this was a natural pregnancy, discovered at 18 weeks. The woman already had two daughters and had been a grandmother for almost two years.
In April, Hanoi's 354 Hospital also successfully delivered a baby for a 51-year-old woman from Bac Kan province. This pregnant woman already had grandchildren and went for a prenatal check-up when she noticed abnormalities in her abdomen.
Doctors say that women who become pregnant and give birth at an older age face many risks such as preeclampsia and diabetes. The older the mother, the higher the risk of birth defects and developmental delays in the child.
