From the age of nine, Nguyen Filip was exposed to football. He began playing at the ABC Branik Praha academy – a small team near his family. At 17, opportunities arose when he caught the eye of Sparta Praha scouts. This marked a significant milestone in his professional playing career at the most traditional club in the Czech Republic. Later, Nguyen Filip was the number one goalkeeper for Liberec Slovan, a club that finished sixth in the Czech First Division.
Van Lam and Nguyen Filip (right) will face fierce competition if both are called up to the Vietnamese national team.
With his rigorous training from a young age in a developed footballing nation, and moreover, with his former coach being the same coach as the legendary goalkeeper Petr Cech, the 31-year-old goalkeeper's professional ability is undeniable. Nguyen Filip's experience, skill, and composure have been demonstrated in 139 matches in the Czech Liga and 18 matches in the Europa League or Conference League while playing for Liberec Slovan and Slovacko. Between 2020 and 2021, Nguyen Filip was called up to the Czech national team several times as the third-choice goalkeeper. Perhaps the Vietnam Football Federation should thank the Czech Football Federation for not using him for a single minute in any official matches. This has opened up the opportunity for us to have a world-class player in the history of Vietnamese football.
WHAT IS THE SPECIFIC VALUE OF NGUYEN FILIP ?
From his very first goalkeeping move in the Hanoi Police FC jersey, Nguyen Filip impressed everyone. It didn't take long for him to get used to and understand the unfamiliar surroundings. New teammates, a playing style completely different from what he had experienced in Europe, but he quickly adapted.
His basic technique is flawless, aesthetically pleasing, yet incredibly precise and effective. In all the matches Nguyen Filip has participated in, there have been almost no technical errors. The way the former Liberec Slovan player chooses his position on the field is also a difference, always very logical in defending the goal and managing the spaces behind his team's defense well. And the biggest difference between Nguyen Filip and his colleagues in the V-League is his footwork. With a technical foundation trained to European standards, he uses his feet to control, dribble, and pass the ball perfectly. Long passes, pinpoint passes, and counter-attacking kicks are all highly accurate.
Nguyen Filip's value has been proven in Europe, and now fans are hoping to see him fully demonstrate that value in the Vietnamese national team if he is called up by coach Troussier. Considering all the criteria set by Coach Troussier, the Hanoi Police goalkeeper perfectly meets them. With a height of 1.91m, good jumping ability, and agile feet, Nguyen Filip dominates the entire 16.50m area, even the spaces behind the defense. With good individual tactical awareness and stable individual technique, he is always accurate in every action on the field. His good footwork will also help the team improve ball control and initiate attacks from their own half.
Dang Van Lam's performance during the FIFA Days in November wasn't bad, but it's clear the Binh Dinh goalkeeper still has many limitations, especially in his judgment, his ability to react to and catch high balls, and particularly his footwork. In the national team's previous matches, when facing high-pressure pressing, Van Lam mostly just cleared the ball.
Of course, everything is just theoretical analysis. As for the reality, we'll have to wait and see how Nguyen Filip performs if he gets the chance to join the national team for the training camp on December 28th. Nguyen Filip's inclusion (if it happens) would not only improve the quality of the team but also create healthy competition. Players like Van Lam and Dinh Trieu would have to try harder, strive more, and be more determined to prove themselves. That would be good for everyone.
Expectations are high that Nguyen Filip will contribute significantly to the national team.
In football, a good resume is very important because it demonstrates, to some extent, the quality of the player. In addition, the level and environment of top-level football are also factors in assessing a player's skill. However, the most important factors in evaluating a player as a star are their performance, their ability to adapt, and their suitability to a new environment.
Many Vietnamese players of overseas origin with impressive resumes arrive in the V-League with great fanfare but then leave quietly, as in the case of Alexander Đặng. We hope that Nguyễn Filip will be able to establish himself in the Vietnamese football environment and contribute significantly to the national team, if Mr. Troussier opens the door for him.
