Vietnam's No. 1 female tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh (world rank 26) competed with Zhang Yi Man (world rank 15) in the round of 16 of the 2023 Finland Open badminton tournament last night (October 12).
The match was a delight for viewers from the start as both sides played aggressively to try to gain an early advantage. With some tricky cross-court smashes, Thuy Linh took the lead 8-3.
But Chinese player Zhang Yi Man showed his class with a series of attacks, equalizing the score at 9-9 before taking the lead back to 13-9.
The game turned around once again when Thuy Linh fought back fiercely to equalize the gap, then led 16-14. Her tenacity in defense as well as her delicate handling at the net helped Thuy Linh win 21-17 in the first set.
Zhang Yi Man played with great strength and determination in the second game, making Nguyen Thuy Linh struggle to defend. The score gap was widened to 7 points (7-14), so Nguyen Thuy Linh decided to proactively control the tempo, play slower and accept a 13-21 loss to save energy for the decisive third game.
Thuy Linh's decision proved to be correct. Although Zhang Yi Man was leading 3-1, Thuy Linh quickly equalized the score to 3-3 and then took the lead over her opponent by 3 points.
Vietnam's number 1 tennis player continued to play explosively, continuously leading before winning 21-14, closing out the overall victory 2-1 after 3 sets.
This victory helped Thuy Linh enter the quarterfinals. Thuy Linh's next opponent will be former world number 1 Pusarla Sindhu (India, world number 13). This match is scheduled to take place on the evening of October 13.
Previously, in the opening match of the 2023 Finland Open badminton tournament taking place on October 10, Thuy Linh caused a shock when she excellently came from behind to defeat the world's 10th-ranked Chinese-American player Zhang Beiwen after 3 sets with scores of 17-21, 21-12 and 24-22.
