Hindawi Publishing House was founded in 1997 in Cairo, Egypt, and was acquired by the American publishing group Wiley in 2021.

Hindawi publishes more than 280 scientific journals.

Many Hindawi magazines were infiltrated by fake article dealers.

In 2023, Wiley decided to discontinue the Hindawi brand, a subsidiary of Wiley, because Hindawi's special issues had been infiltrated by pirated articles on such a large scale that 19 of the publisher's journals were removed from the Web of Science index and 4 journals were closed by Wiley.

Wiley recently announced the closure of 19 more Hindawi journals.

After closing a series of Hindawi magazines, Hindawi's parent company Wiley decided to discontinue the use of the Hindawi brand for the remaining 200+ magazines in the Hindawi system.

Not only has Wiley stopped using the Hindawi brand, it has also completely deleted the Hindawi website. All articles that once had a Hindawi address now point to Wiley.

Hindawi's Special Issues are now regular Wiley issues. All special issues in which the Guest Editor colluded and assisted in the mass publication of bogus articles have been erased.

Tens of thousands of articles published in Hindawi magazines were removed.

Wiley had previously suspended special issues of Hindawi, which were edited by guest editors, because the model had let in thousands of substandard articles.

In 2023 alone, more than 8,000 articles published in Hindawi journals were removed en masse due to corrupt peer review processes.

Wiley has removed more than 11,300 articles in the past two years. The activity of the fake article mills began to be discovered in 2013. Article mills advertise authorship on channels such as Facebook and Telegram for prices ranging from $50 to $8,500 per article.

As soon as the news of Hindawi's 19 journals being removed from the ISI index was announced, Wiley's stock price fell 17%, to its lowest level in the past 15 years.

The drop is equivalent to $420 million wiped off Wiley's market value.

Wiley's revenue in recent quarters has also dropped tens of millions of dollars compared to the same period last year.

The number of manuscripts submitted to Hindawi journals, especially those removed from the Web of Science index, has plummeted.

In response to this series of bad news, Wiley decided to eliminate the infamous Hindawi brand and merge all 200 remaining Hindawi journals into the Wiley system. Hindawi's poor quality journals will now be covered by the new Wiley name.

Publisher on blacklist

Hindawi, along with MDPI and Frontiers, are publishers that are often blacklisted by some countries and research institutions.

Vingroup Innovation Fund - VINIF under the Big Data Research Institute (established by Vingroup) announced a number of fund regulations related to the Science and Technology Project Funding Program, as well as the Domestic Postdoctoral Scholarship Program.

In particular, with the requirement for scientific publication, VINIF only accepts articles that are not in journals of publishers such as MDPI and Hindawi.

Regarding the domestic postdoctoral fellowship program, VINIF said that during the implementation of the funding agreement, the fund also did not accept articles published in journals of Hindawi and MDPI publishers.

In 2023, several domestic universities also announced updated lists of black publishers that are not eligible for funding, including Hindawi, MDPI, and Frontiers.

Meanwhile, according to Tuoi Tre Online 's research, in the list of scientific journals that are scored in 2023 approved by the State Council of Professors, there are many Hindawi Publishing House journals across all industry and interdisciplinary councils.

In fact, over the past years, many Vietnamese scientists have published scientific articles in journals belonging to this recently abolished publishing house.
