Total effort to overcome landslides
National Highway 1A through Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces still has many erosion points after heavy rain. On the road from Cu Mong Pass through Xuan Loc, Xuan Canh communes and Song Cau ward (Dak Lak province), functional forces and contractors mobilized maximum means to handle potholes, reinforce the roadbed and clear away rocks and soil. At the foot of Cu Mong Pass (Xuan Loc commune), more than 10 mechanical equipment such as excavators and self-propelled cranes were brought in to reinforce boulders and crushed stones, and repair 7 damaged round culverts. Construction teams divided into shifts, temporarily handling the positive slope, ensuring traffic circulation through this vital route.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Bao, an officer in charge of maintaining National Highway 1A in the border area of Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces, said that about 90% of the repair work has been completed and vehicles are now moving in both directions. The slope of Cu Mong Pass still has the potential to collapse as rocks and soil continue to slide down. "We will recommend that superiors send design consultants to reinforce the entire slope, to completely fix it in the long term," he said.
At Km396+050 of the Ho Chi Minh road, the West branch, through A Luoi 4 commune (Hue city), the situation is even more serious. The T1 viaduct pier was pushed out of alignment by the rain and floods and sank up to 80cm; the bridge surface was deformed, and the expansion joints were wide open. The Ministry of Construction has declared a "natural disaster emergency", completely banning people and vehicles from crossing the bridge. Construction units have opened temporary roads along the mountainside for traffic, while studying a fundamental solution. Throughout the Central region, hundreds of new landslides and flooding spots have arisen due to heavy rain and water flowing from upstream. Forces from the Ministry of Construction, the Vietnam Road Administration and localities are taking advantage of every sunny day to fix the problem.
Race to clear the route

While dealing with the problem, contractors at a series of North-South expressway projects through Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Hue City and Da Nang City are also racing to make up for the progress after many days of having to stop construction due to floods. At the 11-XL package on the Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon route, Truong Son Construction Corporation has increased heavy machinery and deployed many construction teams as soon as the sun comes out. This is a package with an excavation volume of more than 2 million cubic meters, and a 2.5km section through the forest, so the progress pressure is even greater. The contractor said they are "seizing" every favorable weather moment to complete the project as planned.
At the La Son - Hoa Lien highway expansion project connecting Hue City and Da Nang City, the construction atmosphere is even more urgent. The historic rains in late October and early November caused landslides at many points along the route, with rocks and soil spilling onto the road, causing construction progress to be interrupted. As soon as the weather cleared, the work teams immediately started overtime, working through the afternoon and evening.
At the Tay Hy Bridge expansion project (Hung Loc Commune, Hue City), dozens of workers and technical staff are working continuously. Mr. Tran Duc Hiep, Director of the La Son - Hoa Lien Expressway Expansion Project Management Board, said that landslides have greatly affected the progress. For now, the management board will only allow one lane to be opened, and arrange for 24/7 traffic control from December 21 to December 5. After assessing the conditions, two lanes will be reopened. For the parallel expansion route, contractors are working 24/7 to make up for the interruption.
