The injured have been taken to hospital and some are in critical condition, an official said. The blast was so powerful that residents in the adjacent Seoni Malwa area of Narmadapuram district reported feeling the tremors.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has spoken to officials and sought details of the incident. In a post on X, Mohan Yadav said medical colleges in Bhopal and Indore have been asked to prepare for burn patients, adding that more fire engines are being rushed to the spot.
Footage of the incident shows flames and smoke billowing from the factory. People can be seen running in fear on a nearby road as explosions ring out in the air.
A factory worker who managed to escape after the fire broke out said about 150 workers were present on the premises when the incident occurred.
Fireworks are very popular in India, especially during the Hindu festival of lights (Diwali) and weddings. However, many fireworks manufacturers do not follow basic safety requirements or operate illegally.
