Dak Nong farmers harvest sweet fruits from fruit trees

Thanks to boldly converting ineffective crops to fruit trees, many Dak Nong farmers have created high income and sustainable production.

From old, low-efficiency coffee plantations, Ms. Hoang Thi Ly's family in Nghia Thang commune, Dak R'lap district (Dak Nong) has switched to growing lychee. With 500 lychee trees, her family takes care of them systematically in an organic way, applying science and technology and a modern irrigation system.

Lychee garden is being harvested by Mrs. Hoang Thi Ly's family, in Nghia Thang commune, Dak R'lap district ( Dak Nong ).

The lychee garden has been yielding fruit for many years, but this year alone it has been a bumper crop, with each tree yielding nearly 100kg of fruit. Currently, the price of lychee is around 40,000 VND/kg, an increase of more than 10,000 VND/kg compared to previous years, helping her family earn a high income.

Ms. Ly said that lychee trees are suitable for the local climate and land. There are years when lychee has a good harvest and years when it doesn’t, but compared to other crops, the efficiency is still much higher.

Similarly, the conversion of ineffective crops to durian by Mr. Nguyen Van Binh in Nghia Thang commune, Dak R'lap district is showing a sustainable direction.

Mr. Binh has 4 hectares of land, growing about 600 durian trees and is now harvesting. Mr. Binh's durian garden has a yield of about 80 tons/year. The selling price ranges from 80,000 - 110,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of about 8 billion VND/year.

To achieve economic efficiency, Mr. Binh focuses on clean farming processes, complete records, clear lot division and applying early ripening processing techniques to sell at high prices. In 2023, his durian garden was granted a growing area code, a necessary condition to target the export market.

Mr. Binh shared: "Compared to other crops such as coffee and pepper, durian brings much higher economic efficiency. Thanks to durian, my family has an income of billions of dong each year, life is much better than before."

Dak Nong has a suitable climate and soil to grow many types of fruit trees.

Dak Nong has a climate and soil suitable for growing many types of fruit trees. Taking advantage of this, many farmers have built large-scale fruit tree models.

Up to now, the whole Dak Nong province has about 20,000 hectares of fruit trees, concentrated in most localities, especially in areas such as Dak R'lap, Dak Song, Krong No and Gia Nghia.

Large-scale fruit garden models are gradually changing the face of Dak Nong agriculture. High-value fruit trees such as durian, lychee, longan, melon, etc. are all converted from ineffective coffee, pepper, and rubber gardens.

Fruit trees bring in hundreds of millions to billions of dong in revenue each year for people. To maximize the potential and advantages of fruit trees, the Department of Agriculture has accompanied farmers through training, technology transfer and guidance on building growing area codes.

Many localities have established cooperatives and groups to grow durian, lychee, melon, etc. to share experiences and link outputs. This is an important premise for Dak Nong fruit products to target markets outside the province and for export.

However, fruit tree development needs to go hand in hand with production linkage, reorganization of production according to cooperatives, cooperatives, application of VietGAP and organic processes... to ensure stable, sustainable development and suitability with market trends.

In reality, fruit trees are no longer an experimental choice but have become a strategic direction, suitable for the soil and climate conditions of Dak Nong province.

In the context of deep integration, when the market demands increasingly high quality and traceability, the systematic development of fruit trees with planning and growing area codes will be the "golden key" to help Dak Nong agricultural products affirm their brand and increase their value.

From now until 2030, Dak Nong will convert over 8,557 hectares with 4 main crops including coffee, pepper, rubber, cashew which are not adapted or not adapted well to grow other crops, mainly fruit trees. Of which, by 2025, the province will convert over 2,860 hectares, by 2030 it will convert another 5,696 hectares.
