(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Director and People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh praised young filmmakers whose art films have made a splash and won awards at international film festivals recently.

On the morning of November 27th, the Congress of the Vietnam Film Development Promotion Association for the second term (2024-2029) took place in Hanoi .

Speaking at the event, Ms. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Film Development Promotion Association, said that after 5 years of operation, the Association has achieved remarkable results, from organizing major film events to promoting international film cooperation, linked to promoting the image of Vietnam and contributing to tourism development.

The most outstanding achievement of the first term was the founding and successful organization of the Da Nang Asian Film Festival in collaboration with the Da Nang City People's Committee.

This is also the only international film festival held annually in Vietnam, and it has already had two successful editions that far exceeded expectations for a relatively young film festival.

During its first term, the Association also organized a series of important workshops and seminars, creating a forum for dialogue between Vietnamese and international filmmakers, artists, and experts.

The association has also actively promoted Vietnamese cinema to the world through major events such as the Busan International Film Festival and the Tokyo International Film Festival.

In addition, the Association has many activities contributing to the development of young talents and community initiatives, constantly expanding its network of strategic cooperation with localities, creating a foundation for sustainable development of the Vietnamese film and cultural industry.

Associate Professor Bui Hoai Son, a standing member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Education, also stated that, in its five years of operation, the Vietnam Film Development Promotion Association has achieved many remarkable feats, including the success of the Da Nang Asian Film Festival.

However, Mr. Son believes that the film industry is facing many difficulties due to competition from foreign artistic products, which has led to a shift in audience tastes.

"Many people believe that this is just an entertainment industry, something that's optional. I think the film industry should save itself before waiting to be saved," Mr. Son said.

Associate Professor Bui Hoai Son also shared "one sad piece of news and one good piece of news" with the Congress. The sad news is that the National Assembly has just approved the increase of the tax rate from 5% to 10% for the cultural sector, including cinema.

The good news is that the National Assembly has just passed a resolution on the investment policy for the National Target Program on Cultural Development for the period 2025-2035.

"I once said, quite bitterly, that the most beautiful things in life are reserved for culture, yet not much has been done for culture. This is the time to speak the truth and do the right things for culture and cinema. It's the time for artists to truly benefit," Mr. Bui Hoai Son stated frankly.

Director and People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh also noted that the Association has built bridges to help localities such as Da Nang, Phu Yen, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh... promote tourism through film, helping filmmakers access beautiful natural landscapes to use as settings in their films.

Director Dang Nhat Minh added that he was impressed with young Vietnamese filmmakers and their award-winning films at international film festivals, such as: Inside the Golden Cocoon, The Coolie Never Cries...

"We should pay attention to independent, art-house filmmakers. This is a new wave that will allow Vietnamese cinema to make a breakthrough," director Dang Nhat Minh expressed.

The Congress also elected the President, Vice Presidents, Standing Committee, and Executive Committee for the second term to continue leading and building the sustainable development of the Association.

Accordingly, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan - Vice President of the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism - will continue to hold the position of President of the Vietnam Film Development Promotion Association for the second term (2024 - 2029).

In addition to the five Vice Presidents, the Association also elected 19 other members to the Standing Committee and the Executive Committee for the second term.

At the event, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, on behalf of the leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, presented the Ministry's commendation decision to the Association as well as to Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan personally.

Speaking on behalf of the Central Propaganda Department at the Congress, Dr. Dinh Thi Mai, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, highly appreciated and acknowledged the important achievements that the Association had made in its first term.

According to Dr. Dinh Thi Mai, the Association has made significant contributions to the development of the country's film and culture. In the future, the Association needs to continue to further enhance its role.

"I believe that, with the sense of responsibility and enthusiasm of Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, who has led the Association for over 5 years, and the Executive Board, along with all members, the Association will have a brilliant new term, continuing to play a core role in building a strong and sustainable Vietnamese film industry, contributing to building an advanced Vietnamese culture rich in national identity," shared Dr. Dinh Thi Mai.
