NHK reported that the Japanese parliament voted on October 1st to elect Ishiba Shigeru as prime minister, succeeding Kishida Fumio.
Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leads a coalition that controls both houses of parliament.
Lawmakers congratulated Ishiba Shigeru on becoming Prime Minister of Japan on October 1st.
The 67-year-old politician has held numerous cabinet positions, including Japan's Minister of Defense .
Ishiba Shigeru was elected LDP leader last week after former Prime Minister Kishida announced in August that he would not seek re-election amid the party's fundraising scandals.
On October 1st, Kishida's cabinet resigned to make way for the next government. Ishiba is expected to announce his new cabinet later that day. Earlier, he stated he would dissolve the Lower House to hold early elections on October 27th.
According to Kyodo News, former Defense Minister Iwaya Takeshi will become the new foreign minister, while former Defense Minister Nakatani Gen has been reappointed to his former position.
Hayashi Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary to former Prime Minister Kishida, will continue in the aforementioned position. Former Health Minister Kato Katsunobu will become Finance Minister. Both Hayashi and Kato ran for LDP leadership last week.
