During a campaign rally in Colorado on October 11 (US time), Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump described immigrants as dangerous criminals, calling for the death penalty for immigrants who kill US citizens. According to Reuters, in the final weeks before the US presidential election on November 5, Mr. Trump had many tough words about his anti-immigration stance in his campaign. Polls also show that illegal immigration is one of the top concerns of US voters, and former President Trump is considered by most voters to be the person best able to solve this problem. "I call for the death penalty for any immigrant who kills a US citizen or a law enforcement officer," Mr. Trump told a crowd of supporters. Mr. Trump has proposed expanding the death penalty to many other crimes, including sex trafficking of women and children. Meanwhile, nearly half of the states in the US ban the death penalty. The US has a federal death penalty but it is rarely used, according to the non-profit group Death Penalty Information Center. In addition, expanding the crimes punishable by death would require an act of Congress . Reuters reported that one of the highlights of Mr. Trump's third presidential campaign was his focus on what he called "immigrant crime." However, many studies show that immigrants do not have higher crime rates than native-born people in the US.
