The drama "Doctor Slump" stars Park Shin Hye and Park Hyung Sik.
According to Nielsen Korea, the latest episode achieved a rating of 8.2%, a modest figure after 10 episodes.
According to SCMP, this new drama is only gaining attention because it stars Park Shin Hye and Park Hyung Sik. The script has many limitations and the plot is boring, making it difficult to retain viewers.
"Doctor Slump" has been criticized for blending medical and healing themes, but the plot points are unoriginal. Regarding the medical aspect, the film doesn't delve deeply into the specialty. From a healing perspective, the romantic storyline between Yeo Jung Woo (Park Hyung Sik) and Nam Ha Neul (Park Shin Hye) is also quite predictable.
"With their good looks, Park Hyung Sik and Park Shin Hye performed the romantic scenes very well, but it must be admitted that the motif is very familiar. A good cast alone is not enough to make a film successful, and in the case of Doctor Slump, the stars had to carry too much burden on their shoulders," SCMP assessed.
Park Shin Hye's performance was adequate, not significantly different from her previous roles. To date, the most talked-about scene in the drama is the kissing scene between the main couple in episode 10.
The plot revolves around Nam Ha Neul (Park Shin Hye), an anesthesiologist who is oppressed and treated unfairly by her colleagues and superiors. Meanwhile, Yeo Jung Woo (Park Hyung Sik) is a plastic surgeon who causes a medical malpractice accident.
Coming from two different medical specialties, the film creates common ground between the two characters by... having them both suffer from mental illnesses. One with depression, the other with post-traumatic stress disorder, they heal each other.
The plot constructs a complex and intertwined past for the main couple. Ha Neul and Jung Woo were rivals in high school, reunited when they were down on their luck, and later lived in the same neighborhood.
On online forums, viewers said they didn't understand whether the film's content focused on anesthesia, plastic surgery, psychiatry, or perhaps a romance between two doctors.
Moreover, Park Shin Hye's character design lacks originality, even though the actress had a very successful previous work on the same theme, "Doctors".
In fact, the character Ha Neul even shares many similarities with the character Hye Jung, played by Park Shin Hye, in "Doctors," such as her straightforward personality, refusal to be subdued by evil, being looked down upon by those around her, her sharp tongue, and her constant bickering with the male lead...
Seven years ago, "Doctors" ended with a record-breaking rating of 20.3%. Looking at the situation with "Doctor Slump," Park Shin Hye seems unable to overcome the huge shadow of her previous role.
According to SCMP, the healing journey and exploration of mental health in "Doctor Slump" is lackluster and unconvincing, especially when compared to other films on the same theme such as "My Happy Ending," "It's Okay to Be Not Okay," and "Daily Dose of Sunshine."
