Despite breaking the SEA Games record in the women's 10m air pistol event, shooter Phi Thanh Thao was unable to win a medal in the individual competition.

On the afternoon of December 13th, the shooting competition at the 33rd SEA Games witnessed a range of mixed emotions from the Vietnamese shooting team.

Entering the competition day with high expectations after winning the gold medal in the mixed event yesterday, Vietnamese shooters Le Thi Mong Tuyen, Phi Thanh Thao, and Nguyen Thi Thao entered the women's 10m air rifle event with confidence.

The spotlight is on Phi Thanh Thao. The Vietnamese female shooter had a brilliant and outstanding performance in the qualifying round.

After 60 shots, Thanh Thảo achieved a total score of 627.6 points. Notably, in the third round of shooting, she scored a very high 106.1 points.

This achievement helped Thanh Thảo equal the score of shooter Karini Dominique Rachmawati (Indonesia), and together they broke the SEA Games record (the previous record was 627.0 points set by Tan Adele Qian Xiu of Singapore in 2019).

Her teammate, Le Thi Mong Tuyen, also performed consistently with 624.6 points, ranking 6th and securing a place in the final.

According to the rules of the International Shooting Federation (ISSF), qualifying round results are only used to determine the top 8 shooters for the final and for team scoring; they are not added to the individual medal shootout results.

In the highly stressful and fiercely competitive final round, the Vietnamese shooters were unable to maintain their initial outstanding performance.

Despite holding the tournament record, Phi Thanh Thao was unable to make it into the top 3 shooters to receive a medal. Similarly, gold medal hopeful Le Thi Mong Tuyen also missed the opportunity to stand on the individual podium, leaving much regret for the coaching staff and fans.

Despite not succeeding in the individual event, the outstanding performance of the shooter born in 2004 in the qualifying round contributed greatly to the overall achievement of the entire team. The total score of the three Vietnamese shooters (Thanh Thảo, Mộng Tuyền, Nguyễn Thị Thảo) reached 1,872.8 points.

This result helped the Vietnamese women's shooting team win the silver medal in the women's 10m air rifle team event.
