French authorities have arrested two men in connection with the recent theft of precious jewels from the world-famous Louvre museum in Paris, the Paris prosecutor's office said on October 26.
According to Le Parisien and Paris Match newspapers, one of the two suspects was arrested on the evening of October 25 at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport, while preparing to board a plane abroad, and the second suspect was arrested shortly afterward in the Paris area.
Items worth 88 million euros ($102 million) were stolen from the world's most visited museum last weekend, when four suspects using power tools broke into the building in broad daylight.
France's justice minister later admitted that security procedures “failed”, leaving the country “looking very bad”.
According to reports, the two suspects, who were already known to police for their involvement in previous robberies, have now been taken over by specialist police and can question the suspects for up to 96 hours.
The thieves are believed to have struck in the morning, shortly after the museum opened to the public, using a forklift to gain access to the Apollo Gallery via a balcony near the Seine.
Footage from the scene showed a ladder erected leading to a first-floor window. The two thieves used power tools to cut the window to gain entry, then threatened security staff, forcing them to evacuate, and cut the glass of two display cases containing jewelry.
A preliminary report said one-third of the rooms in the area that were broken into did not have surveillance cameras.
French police said the thieves were only in the museum for four minutes before escaping on two scooters waiting outside. Security measures were subsequently tightened at cultural institutions across France, officials said.
