Thanh Hoa has a total forest conservation area of ​​up to 82,123.44 hectares, including 2 National Parks (NPs), 2 Nature Reserves (NRs), 2 Species Reserves and 4 Historical - Cultural Relics, which is considered an important "bag" of biodiversity in the North Central region.

Prominent among them are Ben En and Xuan Lien National Parks and two Pu Hu and Pu Luong Nature Reserves, which are the last "fortresses" preserving the typical forest ecosystems on limestone and dirt mountains.

The work of protecting rare animals is actively implemented by the authorities.

Pu Hu Nature Reserve, located at the intersection of Hoang Lien Son and Bac Truong Son ranges, is famous for being home to many endemic species of flora and fauna, valuable "indigenous residents" that are not easily found elsewhere.

The rich vegetation here, together with the connection with Pu Luong Nature Reserve and Nam Dong Species Reserve, also plays a crucial role in protecting the headwaters of the two major rivers in the area, the Da River and the Ma River.

Moreover, Pu Hu also contributes to climate regulation, maintaining the fragile ecological balance of the whole region.

No less important, Xuan Lien National Park also made its mark with many successful scientific research topics, focusing on the conservation of primate species such as lorises, white-cheeked gibbons, monkeys, and wild-crowned cranes...

These efforts have resulted in international discoveries, notably the identification and scientific naming of the Magnolia officinalis mushroom. Scientists have also identified four species of macaques, two species of lorises (large and small), along with 252 species of birds belonging to 55 families, 17 orders, including 10 rare species such as the Golden Cockatoo, the Red-breasted Cockatoo, the Hornbill, and five species of turtles and five species of civets.

Scientists have full information and evidence proving that the extinct Muntjac population that went extinct nearly 100 years ago is the only known population in the world at this time in Xuan Lien National Park.

In particular, the results of the investigation and recording of the Muntjac species in Xuan Lien National Park with different sizes show that this is a growing population, determined by the effectiveness of habitat protection work. Through research, it was discovered that the Muntjac species was believed to have become extinct nearly 100 years ago.

Thanh Hoa Forest Protection Department said that currently in the protected areas and national parks in the province, there are 1,417 species of forest plants, of which 56 species are in the 2013 IUCN Red Book and 46 species are in the 2007 Vietnam Red Book.

Regarding animals, there are 1,811 wild species belonging to 241 families, 46 orders, 4 classes; of which 94 are endangered and rare species including: 28 mammals, 35 birds, 15 reptiles, 6 amphibians, 6 insects, 4 fish species); 34 species are globally threatened listed in the IUCN Red List - 1012; 56 species are threatened in Vietnam listed in the Vietnam Red Book - 1007 and 71 species are listed in Decree 06/2019/ND-CP of the Government.
