On June 27th, in The Hague (Netherlands), Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Mark Harbers co-chaired the 8th Session of the Vietnam-Netherlands Intergovernmental Committee on Climate Change Adaptation and Water Management.

Attending the meeting on the Vietnamese side were representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Natural Resources and Environment, Planning and Investment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Transport, the Government Office , and the Vietnamese Ambassador to the Netherlands.

On the Dutch side, representatives from the Ministries of Infrastructure and Water Management; Foreign Affairs; Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality; representatives from the Netherlands International Cooperation Organization for Education (NUFFIC), the Dutch Committee for Environmental Assessment, and experts from several Dutch research institutes and universities were present.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha expressed gratitude for the positive and effective contributions of the Netherlands to sustainable socio-economic development in Vietnam.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha expressed his pleasure at the positive developments in Vietnam-Netherlands cooperation over the past 50 years, including the Strategic Partnership on Climate Change Adaptation and Water Management.

Since the 7th Session, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, both sides have actively implemented 19 bilateral cooperation items, of which 10 have been completed, notably: the Mekong Delta Regional Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; the Integrated Mekong River Basin Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, along with the establishment of a Regional Coordination Council based on the recommendations of the Mekong Delta Plan (MDP).

On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha thanked the Netherlands for its positive and effective contributions to sustainable socio-economic development in Vietnam; and expressed his hope that the Netherlands would support Vietnam in implementing green transition, renewable energy, water resource management, and climate change adaptation.

Minister Mark Harbers emphasized that Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha's visit was of great significance, taking place precisely as the two countries celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Minister and Head of the Dutch Delegation Mark Harbers warmly welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on his working visit and co-chairing the 8th Session, emphasizing the significant importance of the Deputy Prime Minister's visit, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1973-2023); and highly appreciated the Deputy Prime Minister's participation and contributions at the recent Summit on the New Global Financial Accord held in France.

At the meeting, the two sides reviewed and assessed the implementation of cooperation activities within the framework of the Agreement adopted at the 7th Session; conducted a strategic policy dialogue on climate change response and water management, and updated priority policies and activities on climate change and water management in Vietnam and the Netherlands.

Given the potential for cooperation between the two sides, Vietnam put forward specific cooperation proposals in priority areas such as climate change, water management, green agriculture, circular economy, flood management, seaports, digital transformation, and human resource training.

The Dutch side positively acknowledged the proposals and affirmed that it would continue to cooperate with relevant Vietnamese agencies. Both sides agreed on potential new areas of cooperation between the two countries for the coming period, including the signing of a Joint Cooperation Plan in the field of sustainable offshore sand mining.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and Minister of Infrastructure and Environment Mark Harbers signed the Minutes of the 8th Session of the Vietnam-Netherlands Intergovernmental Committee on Climate Change Adaptation and Water Management, agreeing that the 9th Session will be held in Vietnam, with the specific date to be decided by both sides through diplomatic channels.
