Foreign summer movies are overshadowed by Vietnamese movies, is there any fever besides Doraemon?

Doraemon: Nobita and the Symphony of the Earth is one of the foreign films with the fastest revenue growth rate in Vietnamese theaters in 2024 (with 66 billion VND).

The film officially premieres on May 24, but there are early screenings on May 18 and 19 to warm up.

But how will foreign films perform in Vietnamese theaters in the summer of 2024?

The answer is that most foreign blockbusters cannot create a big fever at the box office: from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to Temple of Bizarre 4, Planet of the Apes, Imaginary Friends or Siege: The Punisher...

Except for Doraemon, foreign summer movies have weak revenue.

Despite being flooded with praise and shown in IMAX format, the blockbuster Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga only earned 7.3 billion VND last weekend in Vietnamese theaters.

When Mad Max: Fury Road was released in 2015, Vietnamese cinemas were not as developed as they are today and box office revenue statistics were not fully recorded.

But Furiosa 's opening numbers show that the world's top action franchise Mad Max isn't strong in Vietnam either.

Temple of the Strange 4 , a Thai horror comedy whose previous parts were quite popular in Vietnam, also only earned 4.1 billion VND. The film had early screenings at 6 p.m. on May 24, 25, and 26, while its official release date is May 27.

In 2022, the previous part, Strange Temple 3 , earned 20 billion VND. And before that, in 2020, Strange Temple 2 earned 30 billion VND.

Released in early summer, the blockbuster Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom only earned over 21 billion VND in Vietnam. The film has been shown for over half a month.

Anime film Haikyu!!: The Battle of the Junkyard shows that current anime brands are stronger than some American films, earning 10 billion VND in Vietnam after 10 days of showing.

Meanwhile, Imaginary Friends , an American film from famous filmmakers and actors such as Ryan Reynolds ( Deadpool ) and John Krasinski ( A Quiet Place ), did not suit Vietnamese audiences' tastes when it only earned 2.9 billion VND after 10 days.

Released on the same day as Ly Hai's Flip Side 7: A Wish , the top 1 Korean box office film, Siege: The Punisher, starring Ma Dong Seok, has earned 44.8 billion VND.

Compared to the general level of foreign films this year, this is a high number. But compared to Lat mat 7 (currently reaching 448 billion VND), Vay se: The Punisher is inferior.

This situation is not surprising because when it was first released, Siege had only a fraction of the number of screenings compared to Flip Side 7.

Summer still has many surprises

Vietnamese films started 2024 with record-breaking revenue from Mai and Lat mat 7 , combined with the success of Gap lai chi bau , pushing total Vietnamese cinema revenue to more than 1,500 billion VND.

However, this summer, the domestic - foreign film race still holds many surprises because Vietnamese films have not released many strong names.

In the immediate future, in June, Vietnamese films will include Claws released on June 7 and The Most Beautiful Summer released on June 28.

Claws is a survival film with a big investment in special effects. The audience is focusing on the bear, if the image is realistic and scary, it will be a big plus for the film.

The Most Beautiful Summer is a film about youth and friendship, about a group of close friends from young to old, set from the 1990s to the present.

Meanwhile, foreign films show a lot of promise with Inside Out 2 ( Inside Out 2 , showing June 14), part 2 of the film that won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

There are also Kowloon Fortress: Siege (showing June 14) with a star cast including Louis Koo, Sammo Hung, Aaron Kwok, Raymond Lam...; animated film Despicable Me (showing July 5); superhero film Deadpool 3 (showing July 26)...
