By the end of 2024, more than half of this insurance company's short-term investments were listed stocks and stocks traded on the UPCoM system, with 19,100 billion VND. In the first half of this year, this figure continued to increase to 19,438 billion VND.
However, Prudential is having to set aside more than VND291 billion in securities investment provisions, while in the same period last year it made a profit of more than VND719 billion. The loss on securities investment is the reason why net profit from financial activities decreased by 37% compared to the same period last year.
Manulife ranked second in terms of stock investment with VND9,007 billion, down from the end of last year. However, this is the second largest short-term investment of this group, after spending on savings deposits.
It is known that Manulife has increased its investment in securities in recent years. If in 2015-2016, the company only held two bluechip stocks, VNM of Vinamilk and GAS of PV GAS, with a value of only a few tens of billions of VND, while the total value of cash and cash equivalents held was thousands of billions of VND, since 2017, Manulife Vietnam has invested more heavily in securities with a portfolio value exceeding 1,100 billion VND.
The growth rate of the value of the stock investment portfolio recorded an average increase of 57%/year in the period 2015-2022, especially increasing by 2 times in the 2 years of "hot" market growth in 2020-2021. The company also changed its taste and accepted more risks, with annual depreciation provisions reaching hundreds of billions of VND. Manulife is setting aside provisions of more than 100 billion VND for its stock investment.
AIA Vietnam is investing more than VND2,362 billion in securities, a slight decrease compared to the beginning of the year. AIA Vietnam also has more than VND15,000 billion in bank deposits, more than VND26,956 billion in bond investments and more than VND1,000 billion in deposit certificates. In the first half of the year, this insurance unit earned VND1,874 billion in financial revenue, an increase of more than 3% compared to the previous year.
Dai-ichi Life also increased its investment in securities in the first half of the year, from VND 2,978 billion at the end of 2024 to VND 3,677 billion.
