On October 26th, the Da Nang City People's Committee announced that it had agreed in principle to allow the mass installation of QR codes providing street name information throughout the city, as proposed by the City's Department of Transport.

Thus, after nearly three years of piloting on roads in Son Tra District, Da Nang City has now expanded the installation of QR codes introducing street names throughout the entire city.

Street name signs throughout Da Nang City will be fitted with QR codes, similar to those in Son Tra District.

According to observations by Thanh Nien reporters, along major coastal roads in Son Tra District, authorities have installed QR code plates made of galvanized steel, with blue reflective paper and white lettering displaying "street name information" in both Vietnamese and English, on street name signs.

Using her mobile phone to scan the QR code located at the street name signpost of Nguyen Van Thoai - Vo Nguyen Giap, Hoang Duy Uyen (a third-year student at Da Nang University of Economics ) was delighted to see the information leading to isontra.vn, which contains content related to the famous person after whom the street is named.

"I know a little about General Vo Nguyen Giap's biography. But I don't know anything about Nguyen Van Thoai. Many times when I've walked along this bustling street, I've wondered who he was...", Uyen said.

The QR code on Nguyen Van Thoai Street introduces the biography of a famous person, the length, route, etc., of the road, helping many people to quickly find information.

After scanning the QR code attached to the street name, Duy Uyên learned that in early 1820, Nguyễn Văn Thoại ordered the digging of the Vĩnh Tế canal, over 91 km long, connecting Châu Đốc with Hà Tiên and leading water to the Gulf of Thailand. The canal was completed in 1824. Nguyễn Văn Thoại was honored by the people of Da Nang through the naming of a street in Sơn Trà District in 2006, and his wife, Châu Thị Vĩnh Tế, also had a street named after her in Ngũ Hành Sơn District in 2009, connecting to Nguyễn Văn Thoại Street.

"When we need to find out the name of a street, we just scan the QR code, and detailed information from the official channel will appear for us to read immediately. That's a quick and interesting way to learn Vietnamese history, helping readers remember easily," Uyen shared.

Integrate multiple travel information items into each QR code.

According to Thanh Nien newspaper's investigation, implementing the project "Introducing information about street names via QR codes in the district," since the end of 2021, the People's Committee of Son Tra District has attached QR codes introducing 30 key service and tourism routes to 111 street name signs.

These QR codes are integrated from a database of street names and biographies of cultural figures after whom the streets are named, extracted from the Da Nang City People's Council's data on street naming in the area, ensuring accurate information. Residents and tourists simply need to scan the code with their smartphones to be directed to a link to access information about the street name.

Detailed information about the famous people on Tran Thanh Tong Street.

Not only Da Nang residents but also tourists visiting the coastal city are very interested in and participate in the experience of scanning QR codes to find out the names of streets. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc An (residing in Ho Chi Minh City) said: "Like me, many people have probably wondered when reading the names of streets that are named after famous people or places. Da Nang's approach helps those who need to find out, like me, to get the answer right away, which is a very good way to learn history."

The integrated QR codes build a database of street names, biographies of cultural figures after whom the streets are named, and landmarks in the area, displaying geographical location, route, length, etc., extracted from Da Nang's data source on street naming in the area, ensuring accurate information.

Each QR code is attached under the street name sign.

Following the successful pilot program, the Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee instructed the People's Committees of the districts and communes to install QR codes introducing street name information on all street name signs in their respective districts and communes (including those that have not yet been handed over for management, operation, and exploitation) in order to proactively integrate necessary information for dissemination according to the needs of each district and commune.

Regarding the form, installation location, and content displayed when scanning the QR code, the People's Committees of districts and communes are required to follow the guidelines already implemented by the People's Committee of Son Tra District to ensure uniformity throughout the city. Localities should prioritize implementation on major roads, main streets, and tourist routes.

Made from weather-resistant materials, the QR code will withstand the test of time.

The Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee also directed the Son Tra District People's Committee to transfer the developed software (used for managing and storing information about street names, adjusting the information to be displayed when scanning QR codes, and statistically tracking the number of people participating in QR code scanning for statistical and reporting purposes) to the People's Committees of other districts and counties for reference and to develop similar software for future management purposes.

It is understood that in the near future, QR codes on the streets of Da Nang City will be supplemented with information in English and integrated with data on accommodation, restaurants, tourist attractions, etc., to help tourists easily access information when experiencing tourism in the city.
