Explain

Truong Luu school was established in 1732 in Truong Luu village, Lai Thach commune, Thien Loc district (now Truong Luu commune, Ha Tinh province). In 1766, after returning from his diplomatic mission, the third-ranking mandarin Nguyen Huy Oanh upgraded and changed the name to Phuc Giang school. This school was founded by the Nguyen Huy family with the purpose of moral education and academic training for the examinations.
During its operation, the school has recruited and trained thousands of students of all ages, including more than 30 people who passed the doctoral exam, along with many village officials and bachelors. Many of them later became outstanding politicians , social activists, famous cultural figures and teachers, having a great influence on the development of their homeland and country. In particular, the famous scholar Ngo Thi Nham, one of the school's outstanding students, later made great contributions to helping the Tay Son dynasty repel the Qing army.
Explain

To serve the teaching and knowledge expansion of Confucian scholars, the family of the Third Prize Winner Nguyen Huy Oanh produced a massive set of woodblocks with more than 2,000 engravings. This is a unique type of “book”, formed in Truong Luu village from the mid-18th century to the early 20th century.
The woodblocks of Phuc Giang school are carved from male fig tree wood. All woodblocks are handcrafted with sophisticated negative engraving techniques. The engravings show beautiful, elegant calligraphy with many types of letters. Each engraved side has an average of 18-20 lines of letters, the length of each woodblock is equal to the size of a page of paper: 30 cm, 20 cm wide, 2 cm thick.
Thanks to being made from the wood of the star apple tree - a type of wood with high toughness, softness and durability - these woodblocks are still preserved intact to this day, becoming a precious heritage. Having gone through many events and ups and downs of history, currently the entire woodblocks have only nearly 400 copies kept and preserved at the family temple in Truong Luu commune and Ha Tinh Museum.
Explain

The Phuc Giang school woodblocks were compiled by five cultural celebrities of the Nguyen Huy family, including Nguyen Huy Tuu, Nguyen Huy Oanh, Nguyen Huy Cu, Nguyen Huy Quynh and Nguyen Huy Tu. Except for Nguyen Huy Tuu, the rest were all famous scholars who taught at the Imperial Academy.
The rich content of the woodblock documents is distilled from the quintessence of Confucianism and the region's educational culture, combined smoothly with indigenous culture, supplemented with many Vietnamese documents, such as the history of Vietnamese dynasties from the Dinh to the Tran dynasties along with comments and assessments of the kings.
When compiling the textbooks, the authors consulted 9 books by many famous scholars and literary authors, including 3 who were envoys to China: Nguyen Tong Quai, Vu Kham Than and Do Huy Ky.
Explain

Teaching, library building and book publishing activities in Truong Luu village have received enthusiastic support from the local government and people. With a large number of students from all over the country coming to Truong Luu to study, it can be seen that the local government has closely coordinated with families and clans in arranging accommodation and organizing education for them.
Nguyen Huy Oanh also established a "study field" fund with more than 20 hectares of rice fields, most of which are used to support students in difficult circumstances, thereby encouraging and preserving the tradition of studiousness, continuing to pass on the flame of knowledge to future generations.
Explain

Phuc Giang School woodblocks (also known as Truong Luu woodblocks) were recognized as a world memory documentary heritage at the 7th General Conference of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia - Pacific (MOWCAP) held in Hue City from May 18 - 21, 2016.
Going beyond the framework of a family, the text system of Truong Luu woodblocks is considered to be highly educational, containing rich and diverse information, with many issues related to the historical and ancient cultural values of the nation.
