The resurgence of folk music has inspired many artists to create new works based on traditional music. One of the impressive music videos recently released, "Mong Thuong Ngan," created a special impression through its music, costumes, and performance, is "Mong Thuong Ngan," performed by the Thanh Am Xanh group, comprised of artists who graduated from the National Academy of Music and are currently active in various fields.
The music video "Mong Thuong Ngan" (Dream of the Upper Mountains) is inspired by the Mother Goddess religion, opening up a mystical landscape of the upper mountains, where eight characters—lords, ladies, and goddesses—from the Mother Goddess religion converge. Each character has a distinctive style, accompanied by traditional Vietnamese musical instruments.
“Mong Thuong Ngan” presents a vibrant musical space featuring eight female artists playing drums, pipa, zither, flute, and zither… The highlight of the MV is the innovative blend of traditional and modern music, where the Xa melody, one of the important melodies in Chau Van singing, is cleverly integrated into contemporary World music. This not only creates a fresh feel but also preserves the solemnity of Chau Van music.
At the same time, the combination of traditional Vietnamese musical instruments such as the pipa, zither, bamboo flute, and drums created an all-encompassing musical space, unconstrained by words. Each instrument reflected the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people, while also evoking profound emotions in the listener, as the skilled musicians performed alongside the graceful and familiar dances in the spirit medium ritual.
The drum ensemble in the music video is not only a striking highlight but also brings uniqueness and a vibrant, youthful atmosphere full of festive colors.
The artists' performance costumes in the music video are also a special highlight, with meticulous attention to detail, from the style to the color of the scarves and shirts, contributing to the vibrant, fresh, and captivating appeal of the performance.
The music video was directed by young director Nguyen Cong Thuc Anh, with cinematography by Viet Vu, and musical arrangement by artists Manh Hung and Phan Thuy. Phan Thuy is also a member of the Thanh Am Xanh group and was the one who came up with the idea for the music video.
The Green Sound Music Group consists of 8 beautiful female members: Thanh Tam, Dieu My, Quynh Ngoc, Tu Anh, Khanh Chung, Phan Thuy, Hong Duyen, and Ngoc Tran. Each has had a different career and achievements in music, and is currently working in different fields, but they are bound together by their love of traditional music.
The Green Sound music group is inspired by the community project of the same name, "Green Sound - Music Guiding the Green Forest"; and is in partnership with the "For 1 Million Vietnamese Bamboo Trees" campaign - a solution to green barren hills, prevent flash floods, build a green environment for Vietnam, and bring economic benefits to people through bamboo products.
A representative of the band stated that the members all feel fortunate to have had access to the spiritual values and meanings passed down through generations of the nation by their ancestors, through the sounds, melodies, and traditional musical instruments.
“We are aware of our responsibility and mission to spread culture through our artistic practice; we hope to contribute to the wider dissemination of Vietnamese traditional music to the cultural and artistic lives of music lovers, especially the younger generation. The sound of traditional music is an effective way to preserve culture through generations; and from there, to inspire love for our heritage. This is also the motivation for us to constantly create so that the flow of tradition continues,” said a representative of the music group.
Thanh Am Xanh aims to be a contemporary, energetic music group that is more accessible to a wider audience – especially young audiences – in order to preserve national identity in general and traditional musical instruments in particular.
The group has achieved many successes with its musical products, such as Second Prize in the National Traditional Instrumental Ensemble Competition with the work "Central Highlands Suite" - composed by People's Artist Tran Quy, arranged by Phan Thuy in 2023.
It's not hard to see the strong comeback of folk music In the current trend of music, traditional Vietnamese music, performed by talented artists, breathes life into it not only the beauty of thousands of years of history but also the new vitality and freshness of modern life. It is these kinds of musical works that are contributing to spreading love and a desire to learn about, listen to, and enjoy traditional Vietnamese music among young people in particular and audiences in general today.
With the music video "Mong Thuong Ngan," Thanh Am Xanh is on a journey to realize a dream about Vietnamese culture and beliefs through music, to continue the core values of the nation.
