According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in South Korea, from December 12 to January 4, in the atmosphere of Christmas and the approaching New Year, the Seoul Lantern Festival 2025 was held along the Cheonggyecheon stream, parallel to Christmas activities at Gwanghwamun Square, attracting a large number of locals and tourists.
This year's Seoul Lantern Festival, themed "My Light, Our Dream, Seoul's Miracle," marks its 17th edition since its launch.
The organizers said the festival features over 400 light sculptures and multimedia art pieces, arranged in four themed areas, creating a nighttime pedestrian walkway stretching from Cheonggye Square to Samil Bridge, the largest in scale and content ever seen.
The "Seoul Wonderland" area combines traditional hanji lanterns with modern media art, recreating the historical flow of Seoul from the early days of electricity at Gyeongbok Palace, the appearance of trains, telephones, and television, to an imagined vision of the future skyline.
The "Golden Secret" area uses lanterns and LED screens to reflect contemporary popular culture, especially K-pop and social media trends.
The Dream Light section showcases collaborative works with installation artists and contemporary artists, using recycled materials such as discarded car headlights and waste wood to create large-scale works with environmental protection messages.
The final area, named “Seoul Fantasia,” features a 15-meter-tall “Seoul Moon” model suspended above the water, with the mascot Hechi and the children's character Teenieping appearing in an imaginary space.
The highlight of the festival is a light show simulating the aurora borealis, using more than 30 laser devices combined with a carefully controlled fog system, creating a three-dimensional effect above the Cheonggyecheon stream, attracting great public attention.
Around the same time, Gwanghwamun Square also became the focal point of Christmas activities and light art, including the Gwanghwamun Market 2025 and the Seoul Light Gwanghwamun 2025 exhibition featuring large-scale media art installations.
The Seoul city government said it has implemented comprehensive safety measures, coordinating with firefighters, police, and nearby medical facilities to serve residents and tourists.
The year-end light and lantern festival series is expected to not only create a warm and unique Christmas atmosphere but also contribute to promoting Seoul's image as a creative city, rich in cultural identity and friendly to tourists during the winter season.
