On January 1-2, the fourth day of Tet (Lunar New Year), Tan Son Nhat International Airport reported a discrepancy in passenger numbers at the domestic terminal, indicating that passengers were starting to return to Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces earlier than usual.

Specifically, today the airport is operating 945 flights, including 860 passenger flights. It is expected that the total number of passengers arriving and departing from the airport today will exceed 146,300, marking one of the busiest days after the Lunar New Year.

In particular, the number of passengers arriving in Ho Chi Minh City surged dramatically, reaching approximately 64,000 people, nearly double the number of passengers departing the city.

To meet the increased travel demand, the number of domestic flights to Ho Chi Minh City has been significantly increased. According to the flight slot allocation plan, many peak hours see up to 50 flights per hour, equivalent to an average of more than one flight taking off or landing at Tan Son Nhat Airport every minute.

The busiest times include 9am-10am, 11am-12pm, 2pm-3pm, and 4pm-5pm. Not only during the day, but numerous night flights also land in Ho Chi Minh City, extending the busy pace into the late night. According to many airlines, passengers are returning to Ho Chi Minh City early, preparing to start work next week.

"I dropped my daughter off early on the 4th, then rested for a day. After that, I went back to work on the 6th. I flew earlier to avoid the crowds and also to have time to arrange my work before returning to the routine," shared Ms. Minh Nguyet, who works at a shipping company in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

With the strong increase in the number of passengers returning to Ho Chi Minh City since the 4th day of Tet, Tan Son Nhat Airport is expected to continue experiencing peak days tomorrow (February 2nd) and the 6th day of Tet (February 3rd). Airlines have planned to add staff and increase flight frequencies to ensure the smoothest possible travel for passengers.

Taxis and ride-hailing vehicles are required to increase their fares by 25%.

In light of this situation, airport representatives have requested that airlines assign staff to be present at the counters/gates to address passenger inquiries and provide timely assistance, preventing any disruption at the terminal.

At the same time, taxi and ride-hailing companies are also required to increase the number of vehicles in service by 25% compared to their initial registration, in order to alleviate the shortage of transportation.
