The content related to the railway project connecting Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports has just been reported by the Department of Construction of Ho Chi Minh City to the Ministry of Construction (on the status of urban railway projects in Ho Chi Minh City).
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the city is currently focusing on completing procedures to adjust the metro line 2 project (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong), striving to start construction at the end of 2025.
In particular, Ho Chi Minh City prioritizes investment in the railway line connecting Tan Son Nhat with Long Thanh airport.
Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee is carrying out procedures to appraise and approve the project's adjusted feasibility study report. In coordination with the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh route is added and updated to the urban railway in the provincial/municipal planning and the city's general planning.
At the same time, complete the procedures to report to the People's Councils of the two localities to agree to assign the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City as the competent authority and consider assigning the Investor (Truong Hai Group) to study and implement the Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem and Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway lines under the form of public-private partnership (PPP). Expected to be completed in 2030.
This is a strategic priority project, helping to shorten travel time between the two localities, while promoting passenger transport, logistics and economic development in the Southeast region.
The city is also reviewing the entire expanded urban railway network, including the merged areas of Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, with a total length of more than 1,000 km, adjusting the locations of stations, depots, TOD areas and urban underground spaces.
The Department of Construction reported more about the urban railway in operation, metro line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) will be put into commercial operation at the end of 2024, serving more than 53,000 passengers per day, contributing to the formation of a modern form of public transport.
Regarding the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project, a pre-feasibility report is currently being prepared, expected to start construction in 2027 and complete phase 1 in 2035. The Bau Bang - Cai Mep route, passing through Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai, is in the investment research phase, with Becamex IDC Corporation proposing an investment plan that is evaluated as feasible and choosing the PPP form.
In addition, some private investors such as Vinspeed, Masterise, Sovico, Thaco are also interested in researching and investing in urban railway lines under the PPP form or directly.
