Incheon Airport Strengthens Control After Byeon Woo Seok Incident

According to JoongAng Daily, Incheon International Airport has promised to take preventive action against excessive celebrity security measures at the airport, following the backlash caused by actor Byeon Woo Seok's private security team last week.

"This is the first time such an incident has occurred since the airport opened, so we could not foresee it and did not prepare countermeasures," Lee Hag-jae, president of Incheon Airport Corporation, said during a joint meeting of the National Assembly 's Land Infrastructure and Transport Committee recently.

Byeon Woo Seok's private security company has been criticized for "overprotection" and "abuse of power" when the actor departed for Hong Kong (China) from Incheon Airport on July 12.

Security guards (bodyguards) accompanying security guard Byeon Woo Seok arbitrarily blocked the entrance gate, shined lights on passengers in the airport waiting room, and arbitrarily checked the tickets and passports of some passengers.

A security company representative said at the time that the gate blocking and ticket checks were discussed in advance with airport security and were not an independent decision.

However, Incheon Airport denied it, saying that they never allowed the private security company assigned to protect Byeon Woo Seok to do this.

"Hundreds of celebrities depart overseas through Incheon Airport every year, but there has never been a case of private security companies overreacting and behaving inappropriately like this," said Lee Hag-jae.

“It was an illegal act and an absurd situation. We take responsibility for not detecting it. We will take this incident as a lesson to build countermeasures to ensure it does not happen again,” he added.

Incheon Airport Corporation is considering filing a lawsuit against Byeon Woo Seok's private security company for abuse of power or coercion. If such actions qualify as crimes, the company plans to take legal action.

Incheon Airport police are investigating three security guards from Byeon Woo Seok's private security company on charges including assault, coercion and obstruction of business.

Byeon Woo Seok recently became a hot face after the success of the Korean drama "Running With You". He rose to the top of the trending actor charts and was sought after.

After the drama ended, Byeon Woo Seok also completed a fan meeting tour that went through many cities in Asia.
