"Hunting" for earthworms at night in Nghi Xuan

On this occasion, when night falls, farmers in Xuan Lam commune, Nghi Xuan district ( Ha Tinh ) go to the fields to hunt for earthworms, bringing in a good income.

At around 7pm, in the brackish water areas along the Lam River, dozens of "hunters" in Xuan Lam commune were present at the foot of the rice fields to catch "heavenly gifts".

In the cold weather, people use flashlights to check the amount of worms to open the drain to release water. The worms will flow into the net with the water flow.

After more than 30 minutes of monitoring, Mr. Dau Van Hai in village 4, Xuan Lam commune, harvested a batch of plump roe. This batch brought him about 3kg of roe, worth nearly 1 million VND.

Mr. Hai said: This year, due to unfavorable weather, the worms appeared later than usual. "Hunting" for worms is hard at night but it is also fun because it brings high economic value.

Thanks to his extensive experience and hard work, the nearly 4-acre field of earthworms of Mr. Tran Van Su’s family in village 2 always yields high yields. In recent days, he has harvested nearly 50kg of earthworms, selling them for 320,000 VND/kg.

"Understanding the characteristics of earthworms that prefer to live in clean rice fields, I do not use inorganic fertilizers, chemicals and pesticides. After harvesting summer-autumn rice, I plow the soil to make it loose, dry it, and sprinkle compost with rice husks to create nutrients for the soil. Therefore, the fields will have a lot of earthworms, giving stable yields, " said Mr. Su.

According to the locals, every year, the 8th to 10th lunar months are considered the harvest season for earthworms. At night, people bring their tools to the fields to hunt for earthworms.

The entire Xuan Lam commune currently has more than 12 hectares of combined production area of ​​earthworms, clams, and natural rice of 60 households. Through evaluating the earthworm output from the beginning of the season until now, the entire commune has harvested about 3 tons, worth nearly 1 billion VND.

After harvesting, people bring the worms home to sell at night at the purchasing point in village 1, Xuan Lam commune. This is a facility that both purchases and processes products from worms, owned by Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cuong's family. In addition to purchasing worms for farmers, this facility also processes products from worms such as: worms patties, worms sauce... to increase income.
