According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export (VASEP), from February until now, the price of whiteleg shrimp exported to the US has continuously increased, from 9.6 USD/kg to over 10.2 USD/kg; the price of tiger shrimp fluctuates from 14.9-19.3 USD/kg.
Overall, in the first eight months of this year, Vietnam's shrimp exports to the US reached over $450 million, a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.
The increase in the price of Vietnamese shrimp exports stems primarily from increased demand in the US market. According to Ms. Kim Thu, a shrimp market expert at the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export, the increased shrimp purchases by Americans are due to traditional reasons.
Before July, the US market typically only purchased about 40% of Vietnamese shrimp, especially whiteleg shrimp. After July, purchases increased to around 60% due to increased demand for year-end festivities, boosting the purchasing power of importers. Additionally, lower inflation contributed to improved consumption levels.
This expert also offered insights into the forecast of a decrease in global shrimp production in 2024 (a decrease of approximately 5%, or 260,000 tons, down to 4.89 million tons) and concerns that rising shipping costs, which are expected to increase sharply towards the end of the year, will lead to increased import demand from the US.
"From over 31,000 tons exported in July, Vietnamese whiteleg shrimp exports to the US increased to over 33,000 tons in August, arguably the highest level since the beginning of this year. By the end of the year, during the holiday season when demand for parties increases, Vietnamese shrimp will be a popular choice for Americans," the expert added.
Meanwhile, according to Mr. Nguyen Khanh Nguyen, a shrimp producer and exporter in Bac Lieu province, in early July, his American partners contacted him to place additional orders for the year-end season, especially for whiteleg shrimp to be used in dishes such as steamed shrimp with beer, grilled shrimp, and shrimp in butter sauce.
Mr. Nguyen said: "They raised the issue early to agree on the price. American customers said that Ecuadorian and Indian shrimp have warnings about antibiotic residue and food safety, so Vietnamese whiteleg shrimp is the top choice for Americans."
Although Vietnamese shrimp has many opportunities in the US market, export businesses are also boosting exports to other potential markets such as Europe, Japan, South Korea, and China… to reduce dependence on those markets and ensure the sustainable long-term development of the shrimp industry.
In the first eight months of the year, shrimp exports reached $2.4 billion, leading the seafood industry.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , seafood exports continued their recovery trend, with a 20% growth in August 2024, reaching nearly $953 million. For the first eight months of the year, seafood exports totaled nearly $6.3 billion, a 9% increase compared to the same period last year…
Shrimp exports alone reached $2.4 billion, a 9% increase compared to the same period last year. Of this, whiteleg shrimp exports reached approximately $1.75 billion, an 8% increase; while black tiger shrimp exports remained 7% lower than the same period, reaching nearly $290 million. Lobster exports, however, maintained strong growth, resulting in export revenue in the first eight months of 2024 being over 140% higher than the same period in 2023.
