Nearly a month after the historic flood, the people of Dong Ang hamlet still cannot live in peace because the village road running along the Cau River has been eroded, threatening the safety of their homes and their travel. The Cau River has built up fertile fields for many years, but in a moment, the flood swept away the businesses of many households, and at the same time, made the whole hamlet uneasy because of the strong erosion of the riverbank.

To see the full extent of the natural disaster damage and the local emergency, Mr. Duong Ba Tai, the Front Working Committee of Dong Ang hamlet, led us around the hamlet, especially the vulnerable sections that suffered severe landslides.

Pointing to the heavily eroded sections, Mr. Duong Ba Tai, from the Dong Ang Village Front Working Committee, worried: With this situation, if the river water level rises a few more times, the road along the riverbank will no longer exist. We have reported this situation to our superiors and hope to receive support for the construction of the embankment soon.

According to local people, the riverbank erosion has been going on since Typhoon Yagi in 2024, but only really got worse after the flood of Typhoon No. 11. The total length of the erosion is estimated at about 400m, of which many sections are about 6-8m long and 10m deep, especially the section of the river that cuts into the foot of the inner-village road. Local authorities have put up signs and put up warning ropes along the eroded road. Because it is the only road, despite the danger, Dong Ang people still have to cross it every day.

“Every time I pass this road, I feel worried because the river is eroding all the way to the foot of the road. I tell my children not to play or walk near the edge of the road adjacent to the river bank because it is very dangerous,” said Mr. Duong Van Tinh, Dong Ang hamlet, Phu Binh commune.

What people here worry about is not only the traffic but also the safety of the houses and property of households living near the river. Dong Ang hamlet has 115 households, of which nearly 80 households live near the riverbank. After many years of saving, Ms. Duong Thi Que's family has just finished building a house worth nearly 1 billion VND. The joy of having a new house did not last long, Ms. Que was worried again when the riverbank eroded almost to the yard.

Ms. Que expressed: Our family and neighbors hope that superiors will build embankments to protect roads and property, helping people live in peace.

The daily life and travel of Dong Ang people are still facing many difficulties due to the consequences of historic floods. Early investment in building embankments to prevent erosion and protect roads and property is the urgent wish of households living along Cau River.
