Following the transplant, by the third day, the patient was able to stand up and walk continuously for 4 minutes. By the fifth day, the patient's ability to walk continuously increased to 15 minutes, which helped the lungs expand better.
On the afternoon of February 15th, the National Lung Hospital held a press conference to announce the first successful lung transplant performed at the hospital during the recent Lunar New Year (Year of the Dragon) 2024.
Attending the meeting, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan stated that this is good news at the beginning of the year, a milestone for Vietnam's organ and tissue transplantation industry. On this occasion, the Minister of Health congratulated the female patient who received a lung transplant, and at the same time acknowledged and honored the noble act of the 26-year-old man who donated 8 organs to save many patients, including two lungs that helped a young woman with a life-threatening lung disease to be given a new lease on life through a lung transplant.
Sharing details about this lung transplant, Mr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, said that the transplant was performed on February 10th (the 30th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Rabbit). The recipient was a 21-year-old female student from Bac Kan province suffering from lymphatic leiomyoma (LAM), also known as perforated lung disease.
"This disease creates air cysts in the lungs, which spread and cause loss of lung function. The patient's condition is very serious, and death is likely within the next few months if a lung transplant is not performed," Mr. Dinh Van Luong shared.
According to the leaders of the National Lung Hospital, this lung transplant was the most successful according to the standards of the UCSF Lung Transplant Center in the United States. After the transplant, on the third day, the patient was able to stand up and walk for 4 minutes continuously, and by the fifth day, the time the patient could walk continuously increased to 15 minutes, which helped the lungs expand better.
According to the Director of the National Lung Hospital, the success of this lung transplant has been recognized in the list of lung transplant systems worldwide and has made a significant contribution to Vietnam's achievements in organ transplantation techniques.
