Thailand prepares penalty shootout scenario with Vietnam team

" The Thai team has prepared a penalty shootout plan against the Vietnamese team ," coach Ishii Masatada said at the press conference before the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final.

Thailand lost 1-2 to Vietnam in the first leg of the final at Viet Tri Stadium ( Phu Tho province). The 2024 AFF Cup does not have the away goals rule. Therefore, the Thai team needs to win by at least two goals to overturn the deficit. If Thailand wins by only one goal, the two teams will play extra time and possibly a penalty shootout.

The Thai team actually faced several disadvantages before the second leg of the final. They had to play a grueling 120 minutes against the Philippines, then immediately travel to Vietnam, and then return to Thailand. The Vietnamese team had the advantage of playing both the second leg of the semi-final and the first leg of the final at home. Therefore, coach Kim Sang-sik's team had the advantage of more rest days and travel conditions.

In the return match, the Thai team was missing two players due to injury: Teerasak Poeiphimai and Akarapong Pumwisat. However, the Japanese coach was not concerned about this.

Masatada Ishii explained: " There are no disadvantages for us. I can't say exactly what the lineup will be for tomorrow's match. But we have prepared as best as we can for the game and everything is fine with the Thai national team."

According to Thailand's captain, midfielder Peeradol Chamratsamee, the home team is focusing more on physical recovery than on technical preparation. Thailand only returned to the country on the evening of January 3rd, later than Vietnam's departure time.

Midfielder Peeradol said: " We are ready for tomorrow's match. After the game against Vietnam, Coach Ishii encouraged us a lot and told us to be confident. The Thai team must overcome the mistakes we made. I hope the fans will come to the stadium with pride."
