Thai Nguyen: Boosting vocational training and job creation for ethnic minorities.

Over the years, Thai Nguyen has implemented a comprehensive range of solutions to improve the quality of human resources in ethnic minority areas, focusing on vocational training linked to practical needs and expanding employment opportunities. Support programs have been widely implemented at the grassroots level, helping people acquire additional skills, increase their income, and contribute to sustainable socio-economic development in the locality.

Vocational training closely aligned with practical needs.

Recently, the Cho Don Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center, in coordination with the Yen Phong Commune People's Committee, inaugurated three vocational training classes for 105 rural workers, focusing on practical areas such as processing mixed feed in livestock farming, food processing, and techniques for raising and preventing and treating diseases in pigs. This activity is part of Sub-project 3, Project 5 of the National Target Program for socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

After participating in vocational training courses, many trainees assessed the training content as suitable and easy to apply in practice. Ms. Sam Thi Diep (Yen Phong commune) said: “By participating in the vocational training course on processing mixed feed for livestock, I gained knowledge on how to process feed for livestock, learned how to calculate appropriate feed rations, thereby significantly reducing costs and improving the economic efficiency for my family. The content learned is very practical, easy to apply, and suitable for the conditions of rural people like us.”

Similarly, Ms. Ha Thi Lien (Vay Loan village, Yen Thinh commune) participated in a pig farming vocational training course to learn about farming techniques, disease prevention methods, and to find out more about high-yield, high-quality feed products.

Ms. Ha Thi Lien shared: “My family has been raising pigs for a long time, but on a small scale, mainly relying on experience rather than understanding professional farming processes and techniques. Currently, various diseases are breaking out very strongly, so when I learned about the pig farming vocational training course, I registered to participate hoping to learn how to prevent diseases in my livestock, or how to handle outbreaks effectively to minimize losses. Many people like us participate in these courses, and we are very enthusiastic.”

According to Hứa Văn Chấn, Director of the Chợ Đồn Vocational Training and Continuing Education Center, before opening a class, the unit surveys the needs of each locality to develop a suitable program, ensuring that graduates can apply their skills immediately. Thanks to this approach, the percentage of trained workers in the communes is increasing, many households have increased productivity, improved their income, and are moving towards sustainable poverty reduction.

In addition to on-site training, vocational education institutions in the province have diversified their programs, ranging from animal husbandry techniques, agricultural machinery operation, and household electricity to welding and cooking. At Thai Nguyen College, nearly 800 ethnic minority students are studying culinary arts, industrial and domestic electricity, and information technology. Student Trieu Thi Vy shared her desire to become a professional chef after graduation. Student Trieu Van Long plans to open a refrigeration and electrical repair shop in his hometown.

Specifically, the Cho Don Vocational Training and Continuing Education Center, during the period 2021-2025, opened 73 classes with 2,555 students, training in professions such as: construction techniques, food processing, raising and treating diseases in pigs, chickens, and waterfowl, animal feed production, and veterinary medicine use… The short-term, concentrated training format in the locality makes it easy for people to participate and suits their production conditions.

In the former Dai Tu district, the Vocational Training and Continuing Education Center also effectively implemented Project 5, opening 9 classes in 2025 with 275 students, bringing the total number of students in the 2021-2025 period to 574. Many students have developed stable livelihoods after training, such as in industrial garment making, tea processing, and ecotourism .

Expanding employment opportunities for ethnic minorities.

During the period 2021-2025, provincial authorities organized 559 vocational training courses and short-term vocational training programs for over 20,000 trainees, the majority of whom were ethnic minorities. Approximately 400 workers were supported to work abroad under contract; and over 6,000 workers received advice on market information and support policies. These activities contributed to expanding career options, reducing risks in the job search process, and improving sustainable income for the people.

Vocational training linked to market needs and focusing on occupations suitable to local conditions has brought about significant changes: labor productivity has increased, many households have stable employment; and the proportion of skilled workers has gradually improved. These results not only help ethnic minority communities confidently develop their economy but also contribute positively to the goal of sustainable poverty reduction and promote socio-economic development in the mountainous region of Thai Nguyen.

Through synchronized, systematic, and learner-oriented implementation, Thai Nguyen province is gradually building a skilled workforce to meet the requirements of local economic development, thereby affirming the effectiveness of Project 5 in the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.
