Within the framework of the closing ceremony of the National Biodiversity Restoration Year, Quang Nam – 2024, on February 21st, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province announced the Decision to establish the Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve.

The Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve, located in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province, is classified as a Nature Reserve and was established based on the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area, supplementing it with natural forest ecosystems on the islands, aiming for integrated management and linking of forest, marine, and coastal ecosystems.

The nature reserve is located within the administrative boundaries of Tan Hiep commune, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province, with a total area of ​​23,530 hectares. Its geographical coordinates are within the range of 15 ° 52'30" to 16 ° 00'00" N and 108 ° 24'00" to 108 ° 33'30" E, and it is divided into functional zones including: a strictly protected zone; an ecological restoration zone; a service and administrative zone; and a buffer zone. The system comprises 7 islands: Hon Lao, Hon Cu, Hon Kho, Hon La, Hon Dai, Hon Mo, and Hon Tai. Of these, Hon Lao has the largest area, approximately 1,147 hectares, and is home to the community of Tan Hiep island commune.

The Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve possesses incredibly diverse and rich natural resources. Its special-use forest contains over 624 identified species of vascular plants, many of which are endangered, rare, and have medicinal value (365 species have medicinal value out of 624 recorded species). Notably, 52 rare and precious plant species are prioritized for conservation and are listed in the Vietnam Red Book; and are governed by Government Decree 06/2019/ND-CP on the management of endangered and rare forest plants and animals. The IUCN Red List includes species such as Acampe ochracea (Lindl.) Hochr, Argusia argentea (L. f.) Heine, Curculigo orchioides Gaertn, Cycas rumphii Miq, and Madhuca pasquieri (Dub.) HJ Lam,… In addition, there is a diversity of mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, and insect species.

The marine ecosystem boasts a diverse range of marine flora and fauna, including seagrass beds, seaweed communities, coral reefs, and valuable marine species such as spiny lobsters and red lobsters.

Every year, Cu Lao Cham Island attracts a large number of tourists.

Furthermore, the Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve possesses unique landscape and human resource values, along with the active participation of the entire community in the conservation of natural resources. It is considered a central hub connecting nature, people, and historical culture, a crucial highlight in the region's formation and development. Notable cultural and historical elements include ancient cultures such as Sa Huynh, Champa, and Dai Viet. In addition, excavated relics demonstrate the relationship and interaction between Cu Lao Cham and other countries in the region, and its role as an anchorage for international merchant ships on the maritime Silk Road, which originated in the 13th century.

With a mission to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, manage and utilize resources sustainably, and improve community livelihoods, the Cu Lao Cham Nature Reserve will continue to contribute to promoting sustainable socio-economic development and protecting the maritime sovereignty of Cu Lao Cham, creating opportunities for the community to participate in conservation efforts and exploit potential for tourism and economic development, contributing to sustainable development in Tan Hiep commune, Hoi An, Quang Nam.
