On the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital, the morning class on October 10 of teachers and students of Thai Thinh Secondary School (Dong Da, Hanoi ) took place in a very special way.

SPECIAL HISTORICAL “GAME” NAMED… JOINING THE HANOI FLAGPOLE FROM NHAN DAN NEWSPAPER

Early in the morning, Ms. Loc Thi Lien, the Team Leader, brought to the school 20 copies of the daily supplement of Nhan Dan Newspaper, issue 10/10/2024. This is a special supplement with the theme of Hanoi Flag Tower; including a page of content about this famous landmark; the remaining page has cut-outs. After reviewing the class schedule, Ms. Lien began to divide the newspaper into several classes with related lessons such as History, LocalEducation , and Fine Arts.

“Today, you will cut and paste this newspaper page and assemble it into a model of a flagpole. Afterwards, there will be many surprises for you,” the teachers briefly announced as the class began.

Seeing the new “game” as challenging, the group of students eagerly got to work. Some took scissors, some read the instructions carefully, then huddled together to practice.

Students of Thai Thinh Secondary School eagerly "tried" cutting, pasting and assembling the Hanoi Flag Tower.

“It should be cut like this”

"Be careful not to tear the edge here."

“Be gentle, or the flagpole will be distorted.”

In a moment, the spacious yard was filled with children's voices. After about an hour, a small corner erupted with applause. "We did it, teacher." At this moment, a small model of the Hanoi Flag Tower was recreated, with a small red flag with a yellow star on top.

Once the model was “formed”, teachers continued to guide students to interact with the model through 3 QR codes. Each QR code provided extended content and led to interesting projects related to the Capital.

Pham Tung Anh, a student of class 6A5, said: “I find this activity fun. When we do it together, we become more connected. After learning more, we understand more about the meanings associated with this place name.”

Hoang Khanh Chi, a student of class 7A6, shared: “After completing the model, my pride in the country and the capital has been increasingly nurtured. Cutting and pasting newspapers is very interesting, helping us learn about history without getting bored.”

The joy when Hanoi Flag Tower slowly took shape is a small appendix.

Ms. Loc Thi Lien added: “Everyone was extremely excited to complete the historical model associated with the locality where they live. Through this, the school hopes that students will not only understand more about an ancient architecture, but also feel the indomitable will of our army and people during the resistance days. From there, it will arouse a deep national pride.”

SPREADING LOVE FOR THE COUNTRY IN A NEW AND CREATIVE WAY

According to Ms. Loc, the new product of Nhan Dan Newspaper has helped spread love for the country to children in a new and creative way.

“The children seemed to be ‘touching’ history when they cut and pasted the model of the Hanoi Flag Tower of Nhan Dan Newspaper. When the model was gradually completed, everyone cheered and rejoiced. The children not only completed a model but also nurtured more love for the land they live in,” Ms. Lien emotionally shared about the moment each student showed off their own Hanoi Flag Tower.

Ms. Loc Thi Lien further analyzed: “Educating through images helps students remember longer, creating more interest in learning more about events. If they only learn about local history and geography from books, children are often quite vague and forget very quickly. However, when the curriculum is interwoven with practical activities or direct interactive experiences, children can visualize things vividly and intuitively. Therefore, when receiving the supplement, we immediately thought of letting the children experience it on this special October 10th day.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, the school's principal, expressed surprise at the changes and creativity of Nhan Dan Newspaper in reaching young readers.

“In my opinion, the Hanoi Flagpole supplement is a breakthrough of Nhan Dan Newspaper. This product has changed the way young readers and loyal readers like us think about the newspaper. Besides the extremely interesting cutting and pasting, I am impressed with the QR code printed in the supplement. After completing the model, the children can immediately find out relevant information about Hanoi Flagpole,” affirmed Mr. Cuong.

According to Mr. Cuong, along with the previous panorama of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, Nhan Dan Newspaper has shown its strong and constant innovation and creativity.

“We hope that students will have more motivation to strive and practice in their studies. Especially, in introducing Hanoi - where they live - to other localities in and outside the country. To do this, the first thing is that students must have love and knowledge about Hanoi. The Flagpole model will be kept in classes from now on,” Mr. Cuong added.

Although many students got to experience the Hanoi Flag Tower model, teachers still regretted not knowing about the exhibition schedule late. Due to some school activities, students will have Saturday and Sunday off, so the school will post information about the location and time of the exhibition so that students and their families can experience it.

Over the years, teachers and students of Thai Thinh Secondary School have also actively promoted propaganda and education activities about major events in the country's history. Typically, last October, the school organized a video contest with the theme "Hanoi - a thousand years of culture" for classes. To complete the contest, students will have to carefully research information, historical significance, and events related to Hanoi.
