Light bulbs, phonographs, movie cameras... are famous inventions of the great inventor Thomas Edison. These inventions have a great influence on the daily lives of people around the world . Although he owned more than 1,000 patents for many different inventions, Edison was still disappointed when some of his inventions were considered failures because they were a waste of effort and money.
Among the inventions, the automatic voting machine is considered a failed invention of Edison. This invention was introduced to the public when he was 22 years old with the purpose of helping to save a lot of time in voting as well as daily transactions. The automatic ballot counter consists of a device that connects directly to the voter's desk. On the desk is a metal bar that divides the table into two columns: "Yes" and "No." After people vote, the information is quickly transmitted to the processing center to track the total number of votes and tabulate the results. Thomas Edison's invention was considered by the authorities to be impractical, cumbersome, and costly. Therefore, this failure helped him understand that, in order for an invention to be widely applied in reality, it must have uniqueness, practical value, economic benefits, and the ability to be mass produced.
Similar to the automatic vote counting machine, Edison's tablet-making pen was not well received by the public. The inventor designed a tablet-making pen that was powered by a small electric motor and batteries. The invention of the stylus pen used a steel needle to pierce paper to create a stylus as the worker wrote. Instead of spitting out ink, Edison's pen left tiny holes in the paper. Workers could create a prototype of a document on wax paper and make multiple copies by rolling the ink over it, "printing" the letters onto the blank paper below.
Edison began manufacturing stylus pens in 1875 and hired agents to sell the product in America. However, the pen was quite heavy and made a lot of noise. Another disadvantage was that the device needed to maintain a battery with a chemical solution contained in a jar. Accordingly, this invention gradually fell into oblivion and Edison began to research a new invention.
