On May 27, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio stated that he was ready to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to find a solution to the issue of Japanese citizens abducted in the 1960s and 1970s.
Prime Minister Kishida had previously pledged to build a relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to resolve the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.
Speaking at an event on the matter in Tokyo, Kishida said, "I am willing to meet Kim Jong-un in person unconditionally." This information was reported by Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, Nikkei , and Kyodo news agency .
In 2002, Pyongyang admitted to abducting 13 Japanese citizens decades earlier. Five of them, along with their families, have since returned to Japan, while the others have been reported dead. However, Tokyo believes that 17 Japanese citizens remain abducted and continues to investigate the fate of those who have not yet returned.
Meanwhile, North Korea has repeatedly asserted that the issue of Japanese citizens abducted in the past "has already been resolved."
