Promoting reading movement in Dong Thap

Dong Thap is the first locality to have a book street in the Mekong Delta. In addition, the reading movement through competitions, mobile libraries, specialized reading rooms and digital transformation has spread strongly.

Contribute to spreading the reading movement

In recent times, all levels and sectors of Dong Thap province have always encouraged and promoted the reading movement in schools and communities through competitions and talks on books.

The Reading Culture Ambassador Contest was launched by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2019, becoming a playground and forum for students nationwide. The contest aims to spread the passion for reading to the young generation, exchange and share experiences of reading and develop a reading culture.

Since the Reading Culture Ambassador Contest was launched, Dong Thap province has always actively implemented and organized the preliminary round at the provincial level. This year, the contest was organized by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the Department of Education and Training, and Dong Thap University.

The contest received active participation with 1,120 entries from 82 primary, secondary, high schools and universities. The Organizing Committee selected 2 groups and 104 outstanding individuals to win prizes, and also selected 6 entries for the final round.

The quality of contest entries is increasingly receiving attention from students in terms of content and form.

According to the Organizing Committee, out of 6 works of 6 contestants in the final round, 3 contestants in the province won prizes and were awarded on October 30 in Hanoi.

Poet Nguyen Huu Nhan, Head of the Literature Branch, Dong Thap Province Literature and Arts Association, said: “I have been a member of the jury since 2019. In my opinion, the quality of the entries is increasingly being invested in by students in terms of content and form.

For three consecutive years 2022, 2024 and 2025 (not organized in 2023), Dong Thap province has had 3 to 5 entries winning the national final round. This result is also due to the synchronous coordination of the units."

As for the Reading with Xich Lo Contest, this is a specialized contest organized by Dong Thap Provincial Library in the summer for the past 3 years, originating from the effective exploitation of documents sent by Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan (pen name Xich Lo) to readers during the activities of the Provincial Library. The contest has attracted much attention and sharing from readers, contributing to spreading the reading culture in the community.

“At the Cyclo Reading Contest, most of you shared about the values and spread knowledge from books with documents on agriculture, tourism, the animal world, the natural world, science, psychology, discovery, life skills, education, reading promotion, digital transformation... applied to practical study and work”, said Nguyen Binh Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Thap province.

Promote reading culture to the people

In the journey of spreading reading culture, recently, the Mobile Smart Library vehicle of Dong Thap Provincial Library came to teachers and 300 students of Nguyen Hue Primary School, Thoi Son Ward, Dong Thap Province.

At the program, the Provincial Library brought 2,000 documents with many diverse genres such as literature-art, science-technology-medicine, children's books, reference books, life skills books... suitable for students' ages.

According to the Board of Directors of Nguyen Hue Primary School, students are very excited to be free to choose to read the books they love. In addition, they are also very excited when the Provincial Library staff guides them to practice fun scientific STEM activities.

This is a useful activity, contributing to the development of reading culture among students; creating conditions for students to access many new documents and participate in fun scientific STEM activities after school hours. From there, students love books more and gradually form the habit of reading books anytime, anywhere, accumulating knowledge to serve their studies at school as well as in life.

Director of Dong Thap Provincial Library Dang Nhat Quang said: "The Mobile Library vehicle activity is organized in many localities in Dong Thap province with the aim of developing and spreading reading culture in the community, arousing the passion for reading for students in the province."

Through the book talks and book launches, the delegates, students and pupils were given meaningful messages about reading culture. This provided more knowledge about many fields, including agriculture, the strength of Dong Thap province.

In addition to the Mobile Library, Dong Thap Provincial Library also cooperates with units and businesses to organize specialized book talk programs, including the topic "Agriculture - Farmers of Dong Thap in the era of national development" and book launching and book donation ceremonies of many authors, attracting a large number of book lovers to attend.

“Through the book talks and book launches, we have brought meaningful messages about reading culture to delegates, students and pupils. From there, we have provided more knowledge about many fields, including agriculture, the strength of Dong Thap province,” said Mr. Dang Nhat Quang.

In recent years, Dong Thap Provincial Library has established small libraries and a specialized reading room. Each small library and specialized reading room has special functions, bringing high efficiency, contributing to promoting reading culture.

At the agricultural-tourism reading room at the Provincial Library, readers can enjoy lotus tea and hear about the reading room as well as agricultural models here.

This model has contributed to building the provincial library into an information center, a learning address, an environment for exchange and research for farmers, club members, specialized students and a large number of people interested in the fields of agriculture and tourism.

Dong Thap Provincial Library is one of the provincial libraries in the Mekong Delta region that is at the forefront of digital transformation to better meet the needs of readers online. To promote reading culture to the people, Dong Thap Province's Association for Promotion of Education calls on each family to have a space, a bookshelf, a bookcase to equip with books, thereby gaining more knowledge, contributing to improving reading habits in each family member.

Along with that, libraries as well as local authorities need to continue to promote the formation and development of community bookcases and community reading spots, and periodically replace books, especially in rural areas where there is little access to information from books; thereby, contributing to spreading the reading culture more strongly.
