Promote production, consumption and export of citrus products

The 2024-2025 crop year has many memorable marks for the province's crop production industry, especially citrus fruits. Although there are still many challenges, with the efforts of the agricultural sector, localities, enterprises, production units and farmers, production and export have achieved bright and promising colors.

Green-skinned grapefruit products from Tan Lac district are packaged and labeled before being exported to the EU market.

After a year with unfavorable weather conditions, thanks to the application of scientific and technological advances, fruit orchards still produce plump, quality fruit. Production models according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards have been expanded, helping to increase the value of citrus fruits in the market. In Luong Son district, from 2023 to present, with the participation of the entire political system, enterprises, cooperatives (HTX), cooperative groups (THT), the efforts and active application of science and technology in production of grapefruit growers, the quality of the fruit has changed a lot in terms of sweetness, yield, and appearance. Comrade Bui Quoc Hoan, Vice Chairman of Luong Son District People's Committee, said: Currently, there are 3 grapefruit growing areas in the production and consumption chain of grapefruit products in Luong Son district that have been granted domestic and export growing area codes (MSVT); granted packaging facility codes (CSĐG) and VietGAP and GlobalGAP certification. In 2024, the district will review areas that meet the conditions to continue building and developing the production and consumption chain of grapefruit products in Luong Son district. At the same time, use the effect from export activities to boost grapefruit consumption in the domestic market.

As of February 2025, the province has conducted inspections, assessments and received approval from importing countries for 48 export citrus MSVTs with an area of 332.48 hectares in the districts of Luong Son, Yen Thuy, Tan Lac, Kim Boi and Hoa Binh city. The markets that have been granted codes include: the United States, the EU, Newzaland, and South Korea.

To achieve the above results, since the beginning of 2024, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (DPPPP) has developed and issued technical guidance documents for grapefruit cultivation according to export standards. Production techniques and pest control applied to each growth stage have been disseminated to enterprises, cooperatives, cooperatives and gardeners in grapefruit production areas for export in the area for synchronous implementation. Training, propaganda and dissemination of regulations on granting and managing MSVT, CSDG codes, plant quarantine and regulations of importing countries have been promoted.

In addition, the Department of Plant Protection and Development established groups on the Zalo application to connect cooperatives, cooperative groups, gardeners, and businesses to purchase products. In each group, there are technical staff assigned to closely monitor and promptly guide gardeners. Strengthen coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of districts and cities to effectively carry out the work of issuing, managing and supervising the MSVT and CSĐG codes of citrus trees for export.

With the synchronous implementation of many solutions, in the 2024 - 2025 crop year, the total output of citrus fruits harvested in the whole province is estimated at 202,040 tons; of which orange output is 93,961 tons, grapefruit output is 108,079 tons. Compared to the 2023 - 2024 crop year, orange output is 91.54%, grapefruit output is 118.28%. The linkage in production and consumption of citrus products during the crop year has shifted from the form of consumption without labels or origins to the form of consumption with brands and trademarks of establishments and cooperatives. Specifically, consumption through contracts between companies, cooperatives, farms with enterprises and supermarkets accounts for about 22% of output; consumption through small traders cooperating with gardeners accounts for 50%; through direct retail channels from gardeners about 25%... The main consumption market is concentrated in Hanoi, Hai Phong and neighboring provinces. In the export sector, the whole province has exported 78 tons of citrus fruits of all kinds to the US, EU, UK, and Malaysia markets (equal to 125% compared to the 2023-2024 crop year).

Comrade Nguyen Hong Yen, Head of the Provincial Department of Plant Protection and Plant Protection, said: In the 2024-2025 crop year, the quality and design of citrus fruits will be improved and changed significantly. Thanks to that, in addition to the export target, the consumption and selling price in the domestic market will also be improved many times higher than similar products on the market. Typically, Dien grapefruit products in Dai Dong production area (Ngoc Luong commune, Yen Thuy), some growing areas participating in the production and consumption chain of grapefruit products in Luong Son district and Tan Lac red grapefruit have an average selling price of 9,000 - 14,000 VND/fruit. By February 2025, the province's orange and grapefruit output has basically been consumed. Currently, some areas of Xa Doai oranges continue to be harvested and the V2 orange area will be harvested in March and April.

However, in addition to the achieved results, there are still difficulties and limitations in cultivation, consumption markets and meeting the conditions for exporting citrus fruits. Therefore, the agricultural sector has proposed solutions to complete the goal in 2025, which is to strive for a citrus fruit output that meets standards and is exported to at least 300 tons. Maintain 100% of MSVT, issue 10 new codes. Strive to have a CSĐG that is qualified to issue codes to the EU market...
