Ban Ve Hydropower Plant operates safely during historic flood, reducing flood flow downstream by 74%.

(Chinhphu.vn) - Power Generation Corporation 1 (EVNGENCO1) said that during the particularly large flood caused by the recent storm No. 3, Ban Ve Hydropower Plant was operated absolutely safely, contributing significantly to minimizing damage to the downstream area by cutting up to 74% of the flood peak flow.

According to EVNGENCO1, this flood in the Ban Ve reservoir basin had a peak flow of up to 12,800 m³/s - exceeding the frequency of flood checks according to the project's design (10,500 m³/s). However, thanks to flexible and timely management measures, the reservoir only discharged 3,285 m³/s through the project, thereby reducing the peak flow by 74%, greatly reducing pressure on the downstream area.

The flood started at 4am on July 22 with a flow of 583 m³/s, then increased rapidly and reached 1,500 m³/s at 10am the same day. At 4pm, following the regulation order from the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense of Nghe An province, the reservoir began to discharge water with a total flow of 845 m³/s, of which the flow through the spillway was 508 m³/s.

At 2:00 a.m. on July 23, the flood reached its peak of 12,800 m³/s. In this emergency situation, Ban Ve Hydropower Company proactively adjusted the operating plan from "ensure construction safety" mode to "abnormal operation" mode, based on the report and approval of the Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee. The goal is to minimize water discharge and continue to minimize the serious flooding occurring downstream.

Despite facing a flood of great scale and intensity, Ban Ve Hydropower Company has safely operated the headworks, effectively contributing to disaster prevention and control, protecting the safety of people and infrastructure in the downstream area.
