Tom Cross has a mother from Hue , an American father and was given the Vietnamese name Minh Tam. At the 2015 Oscar, he won the award for Best Film Editing for his work Whiplash .

Tom Cross is also the third international filmmaker confirmed to participate in HIFF, following directors Kore-eda Hirokazu and Kim Jee Woon.
