Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen is a name that receives much love and affection from fans. Having started her career in Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) at the age of 14, she quickly achieved great success. After marrying the son of renowned singer Thanh Tuyen, she moved to the United States and had both sons and daughters.
In an interview with VTC News , Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen admitted that she is a lucky star to still be favored by the performing arts deity, to be able to work in her profession, and to be loved by the audience. Furthermore, the happy family life of the Cai Luong artist is also something many viewers admire.
Cai Luong theater has never faded away.
Recently, the Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) stage has been continuously receiving sad news with the passing of many artists. Witnessing her close colleagues pass away one after another, surely Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen must be heartbroken?
I was heartbroken and couldn't believe it was true. Even now, I still wish it were just a nightmare. I know that "birth, aging, sickness, and death" are impermanent, something everyone must accept. But it's easy to say, yet it's incredibly difficult to witness it happening to the people you love.
- Many people say that cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) is gradually fading away. Does this make you feel disheartened?
- In my opinion, Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) has always endured and thrived with the times. Despite all the ups and downs it has experienced, the history of Cai Luong has spanned over 100 years. I can still feel the love that audiences have for Cai Luong today. Therefore, I remain optimistic that Cai Luong has never truly faded away.
- It's clear that Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen is a very respectful and courteous person, showing great respect for her elders. Who is the person she values and cherishes most in her career?
I am fortunate to have many respected mentors in my profession, beloved idols, authors, musicians, and colleagues who love me. Each and every one of them holds a unique and important place in Ngoc Huyen's life.
But when it comes to the person who loves, encourages, is strict with, and empowers Ngoc Huyen to pursue her passion for art, it is her beloved mother.
- Once one of the most famous Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) artists in the 1990s, the name of Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen remains undiminished to this day. Do you feel fortunate to still be favored by the patron saint of the performing arts?
I consider myself one of the lucky stars in the vast world of Vietnamese traditional opera. After many years in the profession, I still receive the love of the audience, the trust of generations of senior colleagues and friends, and the unwavering support from my family and loved ones. This is something invaluable that cannot be put into words.
- You're so lucky and loved, but have you ever thought about giving up the stage to focus on your personal life?
I never intended to leave the stage. At this age, the passion for my profession is still burning brightly (laughs). As long as I'm still loved and healthy, whether I'm 90 or 100 years old, I still want to stand and sing on stage.
I see myself as a lucky star.
When mentioning Ngoc Huyen, people will immediately think of Meritorious Artist Kim Tu Long, as the two are a perfect duo on the Cai Luong stage. Audiences even thought they were a married couple in real life. What is Kim Tu Long like to you?
I'm happy that my roles and those of Kim Tu Long are loved by the audience. If you ask me how many times we've played husband and wife in various roles, I couldn't possibly count them. That's why, even now, we're still called the "old" couple on stage (laughs). To me, Kim Tu Long is a vibrant, passionate, and fiery person.
Besides Kim Tu Long, Meritorious Artist Vu Linh is the male artist I've worked with the most. Vu Linh was a very warm person. I loved being pampered and relying on him to feel his protection and love. Because we were so close, his passing has caused me great sorrow.
- Besides her career, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen is considered one of the artists who has had a peaceful life, without having to go through many hardships. Indeed, she is truly a lucky star!
I consider myself a lucky star, however, to say that Ngoc Huyen hasn't experienced many ups and downs wouldn't be entirely true. Like everyone else, I've had to go through the storms that come and go in life.
However, I always try to view things calmly so that those negative feelings can pass easily and smoothly.
- So, at this age, you're already used to facing challenges and controversies?
It's not entirely accurate to say I'm familiar with it, but it's not quite the same to say I'm not. However, I've learned to accept everything that comes and goes in my life.
- Audiences are always curious about what life is like for Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen in the US every day.
My life remains normal, peaceful, and serene. Every day, I still get to sing, work, and witness my children's growth. That's a source of happiness!
- Many people also rumor that Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen is a wealthy figure in Vietnamese showbiz?
I'll gladly accept all the good news (laughs).
- Following your life, you'll always see an image of Ngoc Huyen who is cheerful, radiant, and full of energy. How do you manage to maintain this?
I am fortunate to have been born into a large, devout Buddhist family. For Ngoc Huyen personally, Buddhism has helped the whole family maintain a peaceful spirit and a love for life.
- At 53, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen still looks young and beautiful. People say this is a sign of a happy and fulfilled woman in love. Is this true for you?
I am happy and fortunate to have a very loving and doting husband. However, my husband isn't exactly a romantic person. He's very genuine, and that's what I appreciate most.
Our life philosophy is "think good and do the right thing." That's also the secret to our happy family life.
My husband is not a wealthy businessman.
There were also rumors in the past that Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen's current success is due to marrying a wealthy husband?
My husband isn't a millionaire. However, his salary is enough to support the whole family if I were to lose my job (laughs). It wouldn't be wrong to say my husband is wealthy because he has a heart full of love.
- With so many jobs, how do you and your husband divide the responsibilities of raising your children?
We both share the responsibility of raising our children equally, although sometimes I tend to be a little overbearing towards my husband. However, I think that's how all women in a family are, because they are mothers.
- Ha Tien - your eldest daughter - possesses stunning beauty and many talents. Do you plan to guide her towards pursuing a career in the arts like you?
My daughter is also very passionate about music . Ha Tien can compose, sing, and dance well because she comes from a family of musicians and needs to learn and understand. However, for Ha Tien, art is a healthy form of entertainment, while her passion is to pursue a different career path. My husband and I let her choose her own passion.
- It can be said that Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen is a successful and talented woman in her work. And in her role as a mother and wife in the family, does she feel she has fulfilled her responsibilities well?
For an artist, time with family is never truly complete, and that's the case for me. Therefore, I don't dare claim to have fulfilled my family responsibilities perfectly. That's why I always try to make up for it and dedicate as much time as possible to my family whenever my work allows.
- The "mother-in-law and daughter-in-law" relationship between Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen and renowned singer Thanh Tuyen has also attracted much attention. What kind of person is your mother-in-law to you?
I just want to say briefly that my mother-in-law, the renowned singer Thanh Tuyen, is a truly wonderful person.
- With what you have at the age of 53, are you satisfied?
For me, the meaning of the word "contentment" is difficult to explain. I was taught from a young age that: "When you feel happy within yourself, you will always be happy." For Ngoc Huyen, happiness comes from within, and suffering also comes from within. That is also what I always keep in mind to have a peaceful life at this age.
