On April 8th, information from an official of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training indicated that for the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will continue to recruit students for specialized 10th-grade classes at four regular high schools with the same projected enrollment as in 2023.
Accordingly, it is projected that Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) will recruit 175 students; Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District) will recruit 210 students; Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6) will recruit 210 students; and Nguyen Huu Huan High School (Thu Duc City) will recruit 175 students.
Specifically, the four schools mentioned above will recruit the following number of students and specialized classes:
| No. | SCHOOL NAME | PROJECTED ADMISSION TARGETS AND SPECIALIZED CLASSES |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Nguyen Thuong Hien High School | * 175 targets * 5 specialized classes: mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, and English (35 students per class) |
| 2. | Gia Dinh High School | * 210 targets * 6 specialized classes: mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, English, and computer science (35 students per class) |
| 3. | Mac Dinh Chi High School | * 210 targets * 6 specialized classes: mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, English, biology (35 students per class) |
| 4. | Nguyen Huu Huan High School | * 175 targets * 5 specialized classes: mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, English |
Therefore, the projected number of specialized 10th-grade class places at the four regular high schools that offer specialized classes in the 2024-2025 school year remains unchanged compared to the previous school year.
The model of specialized classes in regular high schools has been implemented in Ho Chi Minh City since 2008, and has been in operation for 16 years now.
The model of specialized classes in high schools has often been considered to have given these high schools a boost, while also creating favorable conditions for students from suburban and outlying areas who have the desire and ability to study in specialized classes.
However, it is expected that after the 10th grade enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City may stop enrolling students in specialized 10th grade classes in the four aforementioned regular high schools in the following school year.
Previously, Ho Chi Minh City announced the suspension of regular 10th-grade enrollment at two specialized high schools starting from the 2024-2025 school year: Le Hong Phong Specialized High School and Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School. This is to comply with the regulations on the organization and operation of specialized high schools issued by the Ministry of Education and Training .
Admission requirements for specialized 10th grade classes
According to Ms. Nguyen Xuan Mai, Deputy Head of the Examination Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, to be eligible to take the entrance exam for specialized classes, all students must meet the following two conditions: their academic and behavioral performance for the entire school year in grades 6, 7, and 8 must be rated "good" or higher; and they must graduate from junior high school with an "excellent" grade.
Candidates will take four essay exams, including: literature, mathematics, foreign language (foreign language 1 being studied at school), and a specialized exam in the subject they registered for.
The time allotted for non-specialized subjects is 120 minutes for Literature and Mathematics, and 90 minutes for Foreign Language. The time allotted for each specialized subject exam is 150 minutes.
