Exhibition of 151 typical works by soldier and artist Huynh Phuong Dong

The exhibition is organized by the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and the family of soldier and painter Huynh Phuong Dong on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), and the 100th anniversary of the birth of soldier and painter Huynh Phuong Dong (April 22, 1925 - April 22, 2025).

Attending the opening ceremony of the exhibition "Huynh Phuong Dong's Journey" were Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong, representatives of many museums and relics in Hanoi, embassies and international organizations in Vietnam, painter Huynh Phuong Dong's family and many people of the capital and tourists.

Painter Huynh Phuong Dong, whose real name is Huynh Cong Nhan, studied at the Vietnam College of Fine Arts (1957-1963). He participated in both the resistance wars against France and the US. Huynh Phuong Dong is the name of the painter's son, and was used as his alias in 1963, when he crossed Truong Son to the Southeast battlefield and worked at the Liberation Painting Department in 1964. After April 30, 1975, he continued to use this alias as his official pen name for his artistic activities.

With more than 70 years of hard work and creativity, soldier and painter Huynh Phuong Dong left behind a treasure trove of valuable artistic heritage with thousands of works, focusing on the themes of people and landscapes, most notably the theme of revolutionary war.

A special trio of works by artist Huynh Phuong Dong. He uses the back of propaganda posters to create new works.

Using charcoal, brushes, on rough pieces of paper or materials found on the battlefield, he depicted the resilient spirit and heroic sacrifices of his comrades through two resistance wars and the peaceful years of building the country.

Those resistance sketches became valuable documents, the foundation for him to create massive oil paintings, recreating historical battles such as the Battle of Chu Y Bridge, the Battle to liberate Loc Ninh...

"The Huynh Phuong Dong Journey Exhibition in Hanoi hopes to bring viewers back to the heroic years, reliving unforgettable memories through each stroke of the brave and resilient painter-soldier.

At the same time, this is also an opportunity for today's young generation to feel and understand more about the value of peace, appreciate the silent sacrifices of previous generations, and thereby continue the fine traditions of the nation."

Previously, the exhibition took place at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) from March 15 to 30.

The exhibition "Huynh Phuong Dong's Journey" is open to visitors until May 2.
