On July 30, the exhibition "Beauty behind the halo. Vietnamese lacquer paintings" opened at the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow.

With 80 paintings and 27 interior items, this is the largest lacquer exhibition ever by the most famous Vietnamese artists in the Russian Federation.

The project is implemented by the Russian Ministry of Culture, with the support of the Russian Foundation "History of the Fatherland" and the Foundation for Promoting Russian-Vietnamese Cooperation "Traditions and Friendship."

Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, Director of the Museum and Russian guests warmly welcomed the knowledgeable and art-loving guest from Vietnam - the wife of General Secretary Ngo Phuong Ly - to attend and speak at the art event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

At the exhibition, viewers can admire poetic landscapes with endless space, flooded rice fields, mountain markets and especially the ancient lacquer art of masters whose works have become national treasures such as Le Quoc Loc, Pham Hau, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Pham Van Don, Nguyen Trong Kiem, Tran Dinh Tho, Linh Chi, Duong Bich Lien, Hoang Tich Tru.

In her opening remarks, Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova emphasized that the works displayed at the Exhibition reflect the entire history of the formation of Vietnamese lacquer art. In addition, viewers can also see vivid historical pages about an important period in Vietnamese history after the victory of the August Revolution in 1945, the two resistance wars that ended the colonial regime, and the reunification of the North and South in 1975.

Representative of the "Tradition and Friendship" Fund and Chairman of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in the Russian Federation, Mr. Do Xuan Hoang, expressed his honor to support the organization of such a large-scale and proud cultural activity about Vietnamese fine arts.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Madam Ngo Phuong Ly affirmed that the event has many meanings, not only culturally but also as a vivid symbol of friendship between the people of Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

The Lady affirmed that lacquer painting is a traditional art form typical of Vietnam; it is the result of a meticulous and elaborate artistic process, requiring patience, master skills and the soul of the artist. “Today’s exhibition is not only a cultural event but also a bridge of artistic exchange between the Vietnamese and Russian peoples,” the Lady emphasized.

The audience who are knowledgeable and love Russian art also got to hear Mrs. Ngo Phuong Ly personally introduce the most beautiful, internationally appreciated art of Vietnam: the art of costumes through the image of the traditional ao dai, and the unique art of lacquer.

Exhibition curator Albina Legostaeva said that this exhibition is especially meaningful as it is held to celebrate major events in Vietnam such as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the country; 50 years of the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country; 70 years of the Fatherland Front and the 135th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh , 100 years of the founding of the Indochina College of Fine Arts - where lacquer painting was born. Many paintings introduced at the exhibition are works by people who studied at this school.

Ms. Albina Legostaeva assessed that the modern lacquer painting art of Vietnam today has advanced far beyond the art of the paintings introduced at the exhibition, but in Vietnam there are still artists who create in the old style, painting with many layers of lacquer, a very elaborate process to create works of good technical quality. There are also artists who use modern techniques to make paintings faster but the quality of the works is not inferior, focusing on new ideas instead of going into depth like works made by old methods.

Ms. Albina Legostaeva emphasized that the State Museum of Oriental Art is truly fortunate to have priceless lacquer works and that they are truly a treasure.

On this occasion, the Vietnam Collection of the National Museum of the Orient is also honored to add "precious gems" as gifts from Mrs. Ngo Phuong Ly to the museum and to all Russian art-loving audiences: an ao dai specially designed for the Lady on the occasion of her official visit to the Russian Federation with the General Secretary in May 2025 and the painting "Palm Hill" painted in 1963 by artist Phan Ke An, one of the most typical representatives of 20th-century Vietnamese painting.

The ao dai is made from Vietnamese silk, depicting birch trees, the symbol of Russia, and bamboo bushes, representing Vietnam.

After the exhibition, General Secretary To Lam's wife and delegates visited all exhibition spaces and the museum's Vietnam Room.

On this occasion, the Lady also presented and introduced to the Russian Minister of Culture, Director of the National Museum of the Orient and curator of the lacquer painting exhibition a number of items she personally designed.

Before that, at the exhibition, a meeting took place between the Russian Minister of Culture and his wife to discuss many issues to further promote cooperation in the cultural field between the two countries.

Madam Ngo Phuong Ly expressed her joy at meeting with Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova and thanked the Minister personally and the Russian Ministry of Culture for supporting the organization of activities in Russia to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Lady pointed out that culture plays a very important role in the relationship between the two countries, being the link between the Russian and Vietnamese people, helping the two sides understand each other better.

The First Lady expressed her emotion at the Russian people's love for Vietnamese culture when there were many people lining up to enter the area where the Vietnamese Cultural Festival was held on Red Square after the opening ceremony on July 25.

Minister Olga Lyubimova emphasized that organizing cultural exchange festivals with Vietnam has become a good tradition. These days, the Vietnam Cultural Festival is taking place in Moscow, attracting a large number of spectators and tourists to visit and enjoy. The festival area is always full.

Minister Olga Lyubimova highly appreciated the significance of the Vietnamese Cultural Festival at Red Square and expressed hope that more similar activities will be held in other localities of Russia at appropriate times of the year.

The Minister respectfully invites Madam Ngo Phuong Ly to visit and attend cultural diplomacy activities to take place in the Russian Federation.

Welcoming the ideas and proposals from the Russian side, Madam Ngo Phuong Ly hoped that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation would continue to contribute to strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries through practical cooperation activities such as training, artist exchanges, organizing exhibitions, film weeks and art performances in the two countries./.
