Pioneering to make "poor land bloom"
The mountainous area of Thanh Hoa has 11 districts, of which 6 are on the list of 74 poor districts nationwide for the period 2021 - 2025 according to Decision No. 352/QD-TTg dated March 15, 2022 of the Prime Minister. However, in recent years, with investment programs, projects, and support from the state budget, these difficult but potential lands of Thanh Hoa are increasingly flourishing, with the contribution of successful start-up examples of young ethnic minority people and entrepreneurs. With the spirit of daring to think, daring to do and timely support, many ethnic minority youth in the mountainous area of Thanh Hoa have successfully started their businesses.
An example is Ha Van Chuc, born in 1983, Thai ethnic, in Muong Lat town, Muong Lat district. Like many other young people in the mountainous region of Thanh Hoa, Chuc spent his days "selling his face to the ground, selling his back to the sky" on the fields, slash-and-burn farms, and raising a few buffaloes and cows; but the income was not much, enough to eat was considered lucky.
Not resigned to poverty, he decided to “play big” by using all his capital, assets, and even mortgaging his family’s land title to invest in a brick production facility. Overcoming the initial difficulties, Mr. Chuc’s brick production facility began to do well; not only creating stable revenue but also creating jobs for 8 local workers, with an average income of 6 million VND/month.
Older than Mr. Chuc in both age and "start-up" age, is Mr. Pham Van Thuyen, born in 1973, Thai ethnic group, also a successful businessman in Hoi Xuan commune, Quan Hoa district.
Starting his business at the age of 17, with a comprehensive farm model, Mr. Thuyen is now the owner of Duc Tai Construction Investment and Trading Company Limited; co-owner of Muong Cada Trading and Services Company Limited, specializing in food and beverage services, tourism and entertainment.
According to preliminary statistics of Thanh Hoa Province Business Association, in 11 mountainous districts, there are currently 1,411 entrepreneurs, of which 374 are ethnic minority entrepreneurs. With activities in the fields of production, service business, construction, transportation, and agricultural material supply, these ethnic minority entrepreneurs have been contributing to the development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa. What is more valuable is that they not only enrich their families but also actively help the community, spreading the spirit of entrepreneurship.
Like businessman Pham Van Thuyen, he not only actively participates in social activities but also sponsors 3 ethnic minority children with difficult circumstances in the locality up to 18 years old, including 1 child in Kham village who has lost both parents. He also supported 8 families with especially difficult circumstances with 20-30 million VND to build solid houses.
As for Mr. Ha Van Chuc, when his family's life became better, he spent part of his income to support young people in the village to start their own businesses.
"Supporting" startups in difficult areas
According to statistics of Thanh Hoa Provincial Youth Union, the whole province has over 130 thousand ethnic minority youths, belonging to the Muong, Thai, Dao, Mong, Kho Mu, Tho ethnic groups, accounting for 13% of the total number of youths in the province. In recent years, the issue of entrepreneurship of ethnic minority and mountainous youths of the province has always received attention from authorities at all levels.
With timely support, many ethnic minority youth in the mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa have successfully started their own businesses. According to statistics, Thanh Hoa province currently has over 1,300 economic models owned by ethnic minority youth, accounting for over 17% of economic models owned by youth in the whole province.
The start-up models of ethnic minority youth in Thanh Hoa province have promoted production and business activities in mountainous areas, while spreading the spirit of entrepreneurship among ethnic minorities in the province.
According to Mr. Mai Xuan Binh, Head of the Ethnic Minority Committee of Thanh Hoa province, the ethnic minority and mountainous areas of the province are still the most difficult areas. Therefore, promoting start-up and innovation models among ethnic minority youth is expected to contribute to creating new motivations for the province's difficult areas to develop.
In order to continue promoting business start-ups and attracting investment in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, Thanh Hoa province has been implementing activities according to Content No. 3, Sub-project 1, under Project 3 of the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period (National Target Program 1719).
In 2024, the Provincial Ethnic Committee coordinated with Thanh Hoa Provincial Youth Union to organize a Youth Startup Forum in ethnic minority and mountainous areas; a Conference to honor outstanding youth and students, and successful startups in ethnic minority and mountainous areas...
“Through the activities under Content No. 3, Sub-Project 1, under Project 3 of the National Target Program 1719, we have contributed to raising awareness and skills for ethnic minority and mountainous people on entrepreneurship and business start-up; arousing the entrepreneurial spirit and creative potential of individuals, organizations and businesses in the mountainous areas of the province,” said Mr. Binh.
According to Mr. Binh, the implementation of activities of Content No. 3 "Promoting business start-ups, entrepreneurship and attracting investment in ethnic minority areas" has promoted the realization of ideas and production and business models among ethnic minorities in the province based on the potential, strengths and available resources in localities and establishments.
At the same time, promote, encourage and build entrepreneurial spirit, stimulate creativity, dynamic thinking, transmit business inspiration, arouse entrepreneurial ideas, passion and desire to get rich among ethnic minorities and mountainous areas of the province, especially union members and youth.
In addition to practical support from the National Target Program 1719, ethnic minority youth in Thanh Hoa province have been and are being supported by the Preferential Credit Program to support youth start-ups, which was amended and supplemented in Decision No. 741/QD-UBND dated February 28, 2020 of the Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee. This is a timely, practical and meaningful action, demonstrating the province's concern for the youth start-up movement and economic development.
Thanh Hoa farmers affirm their thinking and creativity in production labor.
