In the Netflix documentary "Captains of the World," viewers discovered a controversial incident that quickly went viral on social media. The incident shows Mbappe bending down to pick up the ball before taking a penalty, with Martinez approaching and making a pelvic motion at face level with the French player.

The Spanish newspaper also suggested that the newly discovered incident was reminiscent of another obscene gesture by Martinez after the final: placing the Golden Glove – the award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament – in his crotch. The Argentinian goalkeeper was criticized by some spectators for this action, which was considered rude and unprofessional in front of officials and leaders of football governing bodies. Meanwhile, Martinez explained that it was just a playful moment and not intended to offend anyone.
The 2022 World Cup final was a night of ups and downs for Mbappe. The French striker scored a hat-trick, but couldn't win his second world title. After a 3-3 draw in 120 minutes, Argentina won 4-2 on penalties.
Martinez played a major role in Argentina's victory by saving Kolo Muani's one-on-one shot in the 120+3 minute.
