The moment Thi Oanh collapsed after crossing the finish line in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 30th SEA Games. |
The 30th SEA Games vividly portrayed the image of a petite female athlete collapsing on the track from exhaustion – a moment that moved millions. It wasn't a sign of weakness, but the price of a grueling schedule and an unwavering fighting spirit.
On that special day at the 2019 SEA Games, Oanh faced a series of extreme challenges. In the morning, she competed in the 5,000m race – a distance requiring immense endurance and concentration. Afterward, Oanh underwent a doping test as per regulations, before returning to the track in the afternoon to compete in the 3,000m steeplechase. These two physically demanding races, separated by such a short time, pushed Oanh's body to its absolute limits.
Therefore, the moment Oanh collapsed after crossing the finish line in the 3,000m steeplechase was not surprising to those who understood the pressure she was under. It was the result of exhausting her physical strength, her unwavering spirit, and her burning desire to win until the very last minute.
It's worth noting that from that grueling challenge, Nguyen Thi Oanh wrote one of the most glorious chapters of her career. With unwavering determination and the enthusiastic support of her fans, she brilliantly won all three individual gold medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m, and 3,000m steeplechase events. But that wasn't the limit for Oanh.
At the 32nd SEA Games in 2023 in Cambodia, Nguyen Thi Oanh achieved even greater success. She was the athlete who won the most gold medals for the Vietnamese sports delegation (in individual events), with 4 gold medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m, and 3,000m steeplechase events.
In particular, the runner from Bac Giang province achieved an extraordinary feat by winning two gold medals in the 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase events in approximately 20 minutes.
