Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc, Director of Binh Tam Eye Hospital, is an internationally recognized expert (Honorary Doctorate – IAU University, USA) with outstanding clinical experience, having successfully performed over 30,000 Phaco surgeries and thousands of cosmetic eye surgeries. He possesses extensive clinical and academic experience in the field of ophthalmology.
The reporter had a conversation with Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc, PhD – a specialist in Phaco surgery training, who is directly in charge of human resource training at Binh Tam Eye Hospital, Thanh Hoa .
PV: Doctor, how do you assess the role of Phaco training in the current ophthalmology hospital system?
Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc: Phacoemulsification is the most common surgical technique for treating cataracts today, but it also requires very high precision. Without proper training, the risk of complications is very high and directly affects the patient's vision. Therefore, Phaco training must focus on safe, precise surgery and good complication control, not just on being able to perform the surgery.
PV: With experience in over 30,000 Phaco surgeries, what do you consider the most important aspect of training?
Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc: The most important thing is to build surgical mindset for young doctors. I always emphasize understanding the nature of each procedure, predicting risks, and proactively handling situations. At Binh Tam Eye Hospital, we apply a method of recording the entire surgery, then analyzing and learning from the experience together. This is a way to help doctors improve quickly while still ensuring patient safety.

Binh Tam Eye Hospital is equipped with a comprehensive system of advanced ophthalmic equipment, creating ideal conditions for training.
PV: What advantages does Binh Tam Eye Hospital have in training ophthalmology personnel?
Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc: The hospital has been comprehensively invested in both human resources and technology. The surgical microscope system with integrated camera, the Carl Zeiss Phaco Quatera 700 machine, and diagnostic and treatment equipment from NIDEK provide a very good foundation for practical training. More importantly, the hospital has built a controlled training environment where young doctors are closely guided from the very first steps.
From a student: Feedback from Dr. Tran Huu Tai, Specialist Level I
As one of the doctors trained from the beginning at Binh Tam Eye Hospital, Dr. Tran Huu Tai shared: "I started the Phaco training program at Binh Tam Eye Hospital under a lot of pressure. However, thanks to the direct and close guidance of Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, I was able to approach surgery according to a clear roadmap, from observation and assisting in surgery to performing each step under close supervision. After only about 6 months, I was able to safely perform basic Phaco surgery."
According to Dr. Tran Huu Tai, the biggest difference of the training program at Binh Tam is the detailed analysis of each surgical case through video recordings, helping young doctors understand the advantages and limitations and quickly improve their skills.
"Being able to review my own surgeries and have my instructor analyze each step helped me improve very quickly. Currently, I am continuing my advanced training to handle difficult cases and enhance my skills," Dr. Tài added.

Through synchronized investment in experts, technology, and standardized processes, Binh Tam Eye Hospital is continuously affirming its position as a trusted address, contributing to the sustainable development and modernization of the ophthalmology industry in Vietnam.
PV: Doctor, how do you evaluate the training model integrated with the hospital system?
Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc: We have developed a training model to standardize the team of doctors for the system of 6 specialized eye hospitals, with Binh Tam Eye Hospital playing the role of a training center. The goal is not to train a large number of doctors in a short time, but to ensure that each doctor, after training, can perform surgery independently, safely, and sustainably.
PV: What message would you like to send to young doctors pursuing Phaco?
Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc: Phaco surgery is a technique that brings sight to patients, therefore, practitioners need patience, discipline, and a spirit of continuous learning. With proper and systematic training, young doctors can completely master this technique and develop a long-term career.
Under the leadership of Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, MD, MSc, and Doctor of Medicine, Binh Tam Eye Hospital, along with young doctors such as Dr. Tran Huu Tai, MD, is gradually asserting its role as a reputable training center for ophthalmology personnel, contributing to improving the quality of treatment and the sustainable development of the ophthalmology industry in Vietnam.
