According to the One Commune One Product Project plan for the period 2019-2025, Tuan Giao district aims to have 10 products recognized with 3 stars or higher. To date, Tuan Giao has 5 products recognized with 3 stars, including: wild melon, freeze-dried wild apples, wild apple vinegar, dried cardamom, and Hong Ky HK13 coffee. These products have demonstrated their value, creating conditions for people to develop agricultural products and bring them to a wider market.
Regarding the program's implementation in 2023, Ms. Quang Thi Nhu Quynh, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Tuan Giao District, stated: “The Department continues to guide communes, especially businesses, in selecting and preparing typical products that can be proposed for recognition at 3 stars or higher; advising and accompanying businesses in completing dossiers and procedures to request recognition or upgrading of products.” Specifically, the district is finalizing the application for recognition of dried macadamia nuts and roasted coffee, and upgrading one product from 3 stars to 4 stars under the OCOP program.
At the Tuan Giao Thoa Doan macadamia processing facility (Tan Giang block, Tuan Giao town), over 40 tons of fresh macadamia nuts are processed during the harvest season, and more than 22 tons of canned dried macadamia nuts are supplied to the market annually. Currently, the facility's products are well-received and positively evaluated by consumers and are distributed to many provinces and cities nationwide. However, if recognized as an OCOP product, it will have more opportunities to expand the market. Therefore, the facility is completing the criteria and procedures with the guidance and support of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to request recognition for its products.
Ms. Doan Thi Thoa, the owner of the facility, said: “Tuan Giao is experiencing strong growth in macadamia cultivation. This type of tree is very suitable for the area, producing delicious, nutritious, and high-quality fruit, so my family invested in processing macadamia nuts, hoping that the product will be recognized and known more widely, contributing to increasing the value of local agricultural products.” To realize that aspiration, the Thoa Doan macadamia processing facility in Tuan Giao has invested in a drying system and many machines, such as shelling machines, drying machines, shelling machines, canning and labeling machines, etc., to ensure the quality of dried fruit and create an attractive appearance for the macadamia boxes sold on the market. Aiming for OCOP product certification and improving product quality, Ms. Thoa added: “My family is planning to further expand the factory, separating the purchasing and processing areas.”
As for Hong Ky International Coffee Joint Stock Company, it has one product recognized as a 3-star provincial-level OCOP product, HK13 ground coffee, since 2020. “Currently, the company is innovating its packaging design to be more attractive and convenient while still maintaining its unique characteristics, and further improving quality, geographical indication, and traceability to upgrade HK13 from 3 stars to 4 stars,” shared Mr. Nguyen Anh Viet, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company.
Along with upgrading the aforementioned products, the company continues to improve the quality and value of its 14 existing products (coffee beans, roasted and ground powder, filter bags, etc.) and further develop two OCOP products: HK10 premium whole coffee beans and HK5 coffee specifically for drip brewing. Mr. Viet added: “The company will expand its fresh fruit purchasing and processing workshop from the current 200m2 to approximately 5,000m2, develop regional linkages in cultivation, invest in more modern machinery, and also focus on linking production process tours and experiences in the cultivation areas.”
Along with the aforementioned products and entities, Tuan Giao aims to further develop and improve its strong and distinctive products, including fresh produce (green squash), processed foods (apple cider vinegar, macadamia nuts), and spices (star anise)... The District People's Committee also collaborates with provincial departments and agencies to assist founders in establishing cooperatives, forming production linkages between companies and cooperatives, and building raw material areas that meet certain production standards of purchasing units. This ensures the supply of raw materials and quality for OCOP-certified products in the district, enhancing the value of local agricultural products.
