The purpose of the visit was to discuss ways to avoid a new escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel that could lead to a full-scale conflict in the Middle East. The visit took place as Washington was trying to broker a ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and the Hamas Islamic movement in Gaza.
General Brown began his trip to Jordan, after which he will travel to Egypt and Israel to hear the views of military leaders in those countries. According to AFP, speaking shortly after arriving in Jordan, General Brown said he would do everything he could to prevent the escalation of tensions and avoid a larger-scale conflict.
The administration of US President Joe Biden is trying to limit the consequences of the 11-month-long conflict in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and Israel.
The conflict in the Gaza Strip erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants unexpectedly invaded Israeli territory, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages (according to Israeli statistics).
The conflict has displaced almost all of the 2.3 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, causing widespread famine and disease. According to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Agency, at least 40,000 Palestinians have been killed as a result of Israeli airstrikes and attacks since last October.
