This information makes many candidates worried.
"Surprise and Uncertainty"
Truong Kha Han is a student of class 12B5 at Nguyen Cong Tru High School, Long Xuyen City (An Giang). Kha Han wishes to apply for the international business major at Can Tho University.
"Previously, I was quite confident in passing my first choice through early admission methods. However, when I read the draft of the new admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, I was very surprised and uneasy," Han said.
According to Han, the Ministry of Education and Training plans that universities will not be allowed to reserve more than 20% of their total enrollment quota for early admission. That means that a maximum of only 20% of the total number of university candidates this year will be "admitted early" before the high school graduation exam.
This is very different from recent years, when many candidates who have not yet taken the graduation exam already know that they will "pass the university entrance exam". Although "passing the university entrance exam" early makes many students not interested in the high school graduation exam, it helps them graduate with a light and comfortable mindset.
Faced with such changes, many 12th graders can no longer maintain a relaxed and comfortable state. Before, Han only studied according to the teacher's instructions, now she has started taking extra classes. Han is taking extra classes in math, literature, and English. The time invested in high school graduation subjects has increased.
In addition, to increase her chances of being admitted, Han also self-studied for V-SAT classes. Han compared that just last year, the trend of admission based on academic records was the preferred option, but now the results are more unpredictable.
Because this year, only a few students will know whether they will pass the university entrance exam or not before the graduation exam. Therefore, Han temporarily put aside extracurricular activities and school clubs to bury herself in studying.
Study extra on weekends
Huynh Tran Minh Tam - a student of class 12A14 at Tran Phu High School (HCMC) - wishes to study graphic design at the HCM City University of Architecture. Recently, Tam has had to rush to study at many places.
Specifically, every evening Tam studies math, physics and English. In addition, Tam has been studying color decoration for over a year now to prepare for the aptitude test.
In the near future, to increase her chances of being admitted to university, Tam will take an additional review class for the Ho Chi Minh City National University’s aptitude test on Sunday. Before that, Tam usually prepared her lessons for the following week on Saturday and Sunday.
Especially on Sundays, Tam usually practices freehand drawing. Now, she can't be so leisurely. Hearing the news of tightening the early admission quota, Tam can't help but worry that this year's exam will be fiercely competitive. The chance of being accepted into her dream major has become more "thorny".
Tam said that she is currently making the most of her time studying and is also facing a lot of pressure. With the assignments given during the week, Tam takes advantage of her lunch break to complete them, and in the evening she has to attend extra classes. Tam had to temporarily put aside her favorite free-drawing hours to… study.
Rearrange your entire schedule
Nguyen Quoc Anh is a 12th grade student majoring in literature at Thoai Ngoc Hau High School for the Gifted (An Giang). Quoc Anh wishes to study literature pedagogy at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. Quoc Anh is also a member of the national literature team that will compete at the end of December.
Previously, Quoc Anh spent most of his day studying for the excellent student exam, so he set a goal of entering university through direct admission and priority admission.
However, in the case that the university only has 20% of its quota for early admission, Quoc Anh feels that if he "goes all-in" on the other two methods, it will not be certain. Quoc Anh returns to review for the high school graduation exam and the ability assessment exam even though the national excellent student exam has not yet ended.
Quoc Anh sat down and arranged his entire schedule, dedicating most of the week to studying. Mornings and afternoons from Monday to Saturday, Quoc Anh studied with the school team.
Every Monday to Sunday evening, you carry your bag to study extra, divided equally between literature, history and geography. Quoc Anh will soon have to find a place to study extra math.
Currently, Quoc Anh spends nearly 1.5 million VND per month on extra classes. But what worries him the most is not the tuition fee but the balance between studying for the excellent student exam and other important exams in grade 12.
"Because I don't have time, at school and in extra classes I focus on studying for the high school entrance exams. When I get home, every night I spend all my time studying for the national team exam," Quoc Anh said.
Schools always prioritize the interests of candidates.
MSc. Cu Xuan Tien - Head of Admissions and Student Affairs, University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - sympathizes with some of the concerns of many students.
However, he advised that you should first stay calm and wait for the regulations on university and college admissions for preschool education from the Ministry of Education and Training.
Currently, the regulations are still in draft form and are being consulted. Once the regulations are official, students can consider adjusting their study and admission plans accordingly.
Mr. Tien added that in recent days, universities have also given comments to the Ministry of Education and Training about the draft and are also waiting for official regulations from the ministry, from which there will be adjustments in enrollment and admission plans if necessary.
However, according to Mr. Tien, in general, universities will still prioritize the interests of candidates above all else, helping them have the most favorable conditions in the enrollment and admission process in 2025.
