Medical School Admissions: Candidates with IELTS 5.5 certificate get 1-2 extra points

Many universities in the medical and pharmaceutical sector have announced the additional admission scores and scoring formula for candidates with SAT and IELTS certificates.

In 2025, Hanoi Medical University will add 1-2 points when considering admission for candidates with a foreign language certificate equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or higher. In addition, candidates who win prizes in the National Excellent Student Competition or Science and Technology Competition but do not use them for direct admission will also receive additional points. If they win multiple prizes, the school will only add points for the highest prize.

The additional points of Hanoi Medical University with specific foreign language certificates are as follows:

According to the school's announcement, foreign language certificate applications must be submitted from June 16 to 5:00 p.m. on July 18 as prescribed.

This year, candidates applying for admission to Hanoi University of Pharmacy with an international English certificate (equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or higher) will have their total admission score added to their bonus points (converted to a 30-point scale) for all majors from 00.25 points to 2 points equivalent to an IELTS certificate from 5.5 to 9.0.

In addition, the school also considers combining high school transcripts with SAT certificates. Candidates need to have an SAT score of 1,350/1,600 for Pharmacy; minimum 1,300 for other majors. At the same time, candidates must have good academic performance for 3 years, with the results of grades 10, 11, 12 of each subject in the admission group not lower than 8.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy uses bonus points for candidates with international English certificates (instead of just a necessary condition for admission like previous years).

Specifically, the school will add points for candidates with IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 80 or SAT score from 1340/1600 or higher in the combined admission method.

The University of Health Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, offers bonus points to candidates with an IELTS certificate of 6.0 or higher or SAT test results of 1,280 or higher. This bonus point is applied to all admission methods of the school in 2025.

This year's total enrollment target increases by 500 students to meet training needs and align with the school's development orientation.

Notably, this year, for the first time, the University of Health Sciences applies a bonus point policy for candidates with an IELTS certificate of 6.0 or higher or SAT test results of 1,280 or higher, applicable to all of the school's admission methods.

Specifically, the bonus points on a 30-point scale are calculated according to the formula:

Bonus points = 0.9 × IELTS score/9 + 0.9 × SAT score/1,600

In case the total admission score after calculating the additional points exceeds 30 points, the score will be converted to a maximum of 30 points. After that, priority points according to subjects and regions will be added according to the general regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training .

To apply for bonus points, candidates need to submit a notarized copy of their IELTS certificate or a paper copy of their SAT exam results to the school before 5:00 p.m. on July 21.

In 2025, medical and pharmaceutical schools will continue to expand the admission combination beyond the traditional B00 block. In particular, Hanoi National University of Medicine and Pharmacy will consider for the first time the combination of English subjects such as D08 (Math-Biology-English) and D07 (Math-Chemistry-English) along with A00, B00. Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy will also add D07 and A02 (Math-Biology-Physics) blocks for many medical and pharmaceutical training majors. In addition, many schools such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi University of Pharmacy allow admission according to the combinations A00, B00, B03, B08... depending on the major.

In 2024, many Medical and Pharmaceutical schools will apply preferential policies or add extra points when considering candidates with international English certificates, especially IELTS 5.5–6.5 or higher. Specifically:

Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy: admission based on high school graduation exam scores, plus points according to the level: IELTS 5.5–6.5 = +1 point; 7.0–7.5 = +1.5; ≥8.0 = +2 points

Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy: priority is given to admission based on academic records, plus points: IELTS 5.0–6.0 = +1; 6.5–7.0 = +2; ≥7.5 = +3 points

University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU Hanoi: reserves about 6% of the quota for IELTS method. Requirements: key majors (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry) ≥6.5, other majors ≥5.5; priority from high to low (≥8.0 for admission first), then convert IELTS + score of 2 combined subjects

Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy: IELTS/CEFR score plus transcript method: IELTS 4.0–5.0 = +0.25–0.50; 5.5–6.5 = +0.75–1.0; priority is given to candidates with IELTS ≥6.5, Excellent transcript – accounting for 10% of the target

Hai Duong Medical Technical University: has a separate admission method using IELTS ≥6.0 (or TOEFL iBT ≥ 60) combined with high academic scores; converted according to the formula "IELTS ×30/9" plus priority points

Hanoi University of Pharmacy: admission based on combined high school transcript + SAT/ACT, plus equivalent IELTS score (from ≥5.5): plus 0.25–2.0 points according to the 30-point conversion table

Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy: priority is given to the combined method of IELTS ≥6.5 (or TOEFL ≥79), with specific quota limits (40 – Medicine, 20 – Dentistry, 20 – Pharmacy)
